i'm honestly disappointed with this. It's like when you find out that your sister is easy. You just can't look up to her anymore.

Yeah, no Quick Shift, no distance markings, no lens hood... slower maximum aperture than competitors... krap.
I agree. It looks like a piece of crap. No distance markings? Really? All plastic? Priced at $200(!), without the lenshood?!? They cannot be serious. A price of $60 would seem more appropriate (although I wouldn't buy it even at that price).

Frickin' unbelievable.

Woh! Quite harsh, and you haven't seen the images it captures...

OK $200 may be a little much, but street price? I'd be surprised if it lasted long at $150.

Well, here's what I think. In short:
  • The K-r looks good; an expected evolution of the K-x, and there's nothing wrong with that.
  • The DA L 35mm f/2.4 is an insult to all those who have spent the past 3-5 years requesting an affordable fastish normal prime, a great lack of respect for photographers who've hung on to Pentax because they hoped to be rewarded in the end. Further, this lens is priced at $230, when the Nikon and Sony 35mm f/1.8 lenses are $200, and 0.8 stops faster. It should be priced around $150 given those specs.

...

I agree with you on the first point. Moreover, it has more FPS and a newer AF than the K-7. In fact it's the fastest Pentax SLR ever. It even outclasses the K-7 in FPS.

The last point however is old thinking... It's a pity for the DOF control, but let's not forget that when the high ISO capabilities go up, there's much less need for fast primes. We have in-body SR, Canon and Nikon haven't. So those brands NEED fast primes.

And of course, they keep the best for the last moment, one day before Photokina. If the K-r already outclasses the K-7 in speed then I have good hopes about the K-7 successor. 8FPS seems feasible and believable...

To those who are disappointed: wait for the k5.

Its a Kx + a couple fixes.
That is a good thing.

The video is hokey, but it still made me laugh (well, once at least). I noticed they said the AF was significantly faster than its predecessor. AF improvements alone could make it worth the upgrade. Even more so if it includes an option for micro focus adjustments for specific lenses.

My biggest surprise is that it's not even a true K200D replacement. It doesn't have WR, and as far as I can tell it doesn't have a connection for an external wired shutter release. These are both reasons I will currently grab my K200D over my K-x.

As for the lens, it will be interesting to see what the IQ is. The FA35/2 really only had good IQ starting at f/2.5, so the new DA35 may be nearly as good. If it's anywhere close to the quality of the DA70/2.4 (I'm not saying I expect that) it could be quite a bargain. I doubt that the "faster" competitors' cheap 35s are any better wide open than the FA35/2, which was a pretty good lens.

Looks like Pentax are moving towards developing WR only in their flagship models. Not a bad business decision, keeping entry-level camera prices down and giving enthusiasts good reasons to upgrade to the flagship camera.

So when will the K-5 be announced?

Thanks, ogl, I missed that. I looked over the specs on the Pentax web site but didn't read the full press release.

I guess I'll have to upgrade now!

Why all the complaining?

They took the amazing K-x and added a dedicated focus assist light, rechargeable battery, and viewfinder focus points.

What else could they possible add?

My only issue is the price right now.

You can find K-x kits all day long for $500. The K-r kit is listed at $850. I'm not sure the extras are worth the price premium. Moreover, you can get a K-7 for the price of the K-r.

Decisions, decisions...

Sorry if this has been up before - Will the new (already bashed) 35/2.4 be bundled with the K-r?
I'm thinking of the price, isn't the really cheap 18-55 and 50-200 officially priced near $200 as well? If we can see similarities, the new 35mm prime will be really cheap and not bought near the official price

Well, the Kx was a great camera at its introduction with class leading high iso performance. the KR is an incremental improvement, not as many as i wish, but probably good enough for me to buy it at the right price:

Kr improvements:
3" 920,000 point LCD vice 2.7"
AF manual Focus adjustment (i like this)
AF SAFOX IX vice SAFOX VIII (does this give it the same AF as K7?)
LI battery instead of mandatory AA
SDXC firmware upgrade possible

Probably a good enough upgrade to keep sales performance through this year, without raising prices excessively for those of us interested in high iso performance on a budget.
