My View of K-r

I have many Pentax cameras, the latest being the K-x, which I love.

There were a few upgrades I would have liked, but no big deal .. then came the K-r

Well I think Pentax has a winner here !

1) an updated or new sensor of the same MP, I love the 25,600 ISO, and I hope DR is great too !
2) an improved AF layout with SAFOX 1X
3) Illuminated AF points
4) 6FPS
5) Both AA's and LiOn batteries (Yahoo)
6) 921k dot screen (very nice)
7) Images transferred thru infrared
8) HDR in camera alignment (what a great feature)
9) Faster AF
10) No more pre flash, infrared light for flash (it is about time)
11) And more features I forgot :- )

With this intro, I'm taking a serious look at what to get rid of in my Pentax arsonal, I first though want to see the quality of the camera !

Do I get rid of my K200D's although they are weather sealed, they are slow as molasses and the sensor is does not hold a candle to my K20D's, and they are not on the same planet as my K-x.

Hummmmmm ... what to do ?

I agree. When they drop down to about $300 on the used market after a few years I'll probably pick one up to get back into digital.

A dedicated AF assist lamp is listed in the specs on the other site. Plus, you can see it in the pics.

Yes, the K20D's I will not sell, they are very good. Its the K200D's and the two old DS's that may hit the road.

The only thing is I can't get much for the DS's and they are small and good cameras :- )

IR images xfer? are you freaking kidding me? Has there been some great leap in technology recently? IR xfer is about the slowest protocol around...oh, well, still looks like a reasonable incremental update to the K-x. But not for me, not even close...migth just have to go window shopping for a 7D this weekend.

Oh, I see. I thought the suggestion was that there would be no visible pre-flash for P-TTL.

strange feature i'd say.. that IR data transfer..

IR transfer is already out of date.. because there's bluetooth. why didn't they implemented that? is it that much more expensive?

all the contemporary electronics, such as mobile phones, computers etc. use bluetooth.. strange move from pentax.

What KR lacks for a mid-range camera
(1) 1080P video
(2) Tilted LCD

Am I missing something in the pictures? Even the k200d had a read out screen on the top of the camera.

It's using IrSimple, which first appeared as a standard in 2005. IrSimple is the fastest of the IrDA's protocols, but it's hardly blindingly so -- about 500KB/sec.

I don't think the intent is to transmit full-resolution photos this way. Assuming the K-r manages the maximum possible speed in the spec, it'd take eleven seconds or so for each full-res JPEG, and around 24 seconds for a single raw file.

Rather, it's intended for making small prints and sending photos from a cellphone, wirelessly. For that usage, IrSimple is perfectly fast enough using downsampled images. A second or so would easily transmit something suitable for, say, a 4x6 print or a blog post.

It's not a feature I'd personally use, but for somebody who owns an IrSimple-capable phone or printer, I can perhaps see the attraction.

No top LCD, I checked on dpreview's brief hands-on

As I said, that and the lack of weathersealing will keep me away
