Wacky new Pentax RS1000 and NB1000 compacts

Pentax announces customizable cameras, faceplate-swapping RS1000 and Lego-loving NB1000 -- Engadget

QuoteQuote:
Sure, you can buy compact cameras in dozens of garish and offensive colors, but what if you're the sort who craves a different garish and offensive color every day of the week? You need the $150 Pentax RS1000, a 14.1 megapixel shooter with a 4x optical zoom, 720p video recording, and faceplate that's just four screws away from getting lost. Using the Personal Skin Designer app you can craft your own custom cover (the first one is free), meaning you could be just a few clicks away from having that brick of a camera look like a real brick. Far more exciting, however, is the identically spec'd NB1000 and its Nanoblock connectors, which are a lot like Lego but smaller and presumably cheaper to license. With that you can truly shape whatever you want, like the above safari scene, which makes this model particularly pocket unfriendly. Both cameras are set to release later this year, though the Lego-esque NB1000 is tragically destined only for kids of all ages in Japan.

I personally think this is BRILLIANT!! People can already customize their cell phones, laptops, and even cars to some degree. So why not their cameras as well??! Does anyone else in the camera market do this? Not that I have heard of. BRILLIANT!! Should sell like hot cakes I would think. If it takes decent pictures too then it will REALLY sell.

Haha, for a second I thought that was the quoted press release - how funny would that be?!

Destined for Japan? tragedy indeed.

In addition to being wacky....

I think they are quite beautiful in their minimalist simplicity. Pentax are taking a page from Apple's design cues, I think, and I find those cameras to be very well designed and very, very modern looking, in addition to their technical abilities. I think the K5, if it ever comes, is probably going to be really gorgeous, a new Nikon F6.

Cheers,
Cameron

This post is also about the other camera on offer, the RS1000 w/ interchangeable faceplates.

Whoa. Maybe I should get some sleep. I am seeing a lego Pentax. WTF IS THIS REAL?!
Nah, it's probably a weird hallucination. Sweet dreams, k-x :-).

This looks like a very fun kids camera! Let's hope those dimples are properly LEGO-sized, then you can really go crazy.
Start them early - there's a strategy...

Hmm, I kind of like this "out of the box"thinking...
Quite smart now that P&S cameras with all their colours seem to have become a "gadget market". I guess this is the ultimate P&S gadget so far...

I agree with the need for "lego compatability"

Maybe just get the RS and use its faceplate as a template to cut out your own genuine lego faceplate.

Looks to me like those nano blocks are a lot smaller than Legos.

The design is really neat though. I'd like the lion one.

Bloody hell.
The Japanese will be all over these.
I love them.
My old Casio's still going strong when I need P & S options though...

Just googled Kawada, and it looks like they're not really Lego-compatible, because the studs are too tall.
