Same here. And since I skipped over the K7....happy birthday to me! (Maybe).

Is there any sense to Pentax' model numbers? I mean , K7, then K5.... do they pull these names out of a hat?

Don't know if I agree regarding video

... and no.

You're right for today and video is here to stay on dSLRs. Because it comes for free like it does in my phone (HD even ).

But with the advent of cameras like the Sony NEX-VG10E, the video function in dSLRs will become obsolete. A nice anecdote of history and a nice add-on for the occasional clip. All the rigs manufactured etc. will disappear and therefore, dSLRs won't be possible to be used for any serious work in the future anymore.

Much more interesting in dSLRs will be a 24fps mode with ~6MP resolution though Even if with an electronic rolling shutter, preferrably not.
The newer dedicated sony and panasonic (olympus also?) cameras using interchangeable lenses (also dedicated for video) certainly have potential and will be built for video use from the ground up with attendant advantages (for example just try doing *in-camera* timelapse on anything out there in D-SLR land at present), and are certainly creating waves in industry, but I wonder if everything is going to get a little too specialised (=pricey).

In saying that, I think sony has a nice synergy going on with compact NEX products and the NEX-VG10E (that they can share lenses).

I think at the end of the day, D-SLR's are still going to have an enthusiast role for video, based on price point/quality achievable. Indy film makers typically don't have a big budget!

So I think video quality and features (manual control/filters to generate different effects) at various price points do add to the bottom line appeal of a product. And I would think a lot about taking a camcorder into a wet environment, not so with a weathersealed D-SLR/lenses.

Now do I want peak still image quality - yes!
I am a consumer, I want it all! (for not much money...)

It's gotta be some sort of Japanese marketing thing, either that or a dart board.
In digital we have had:
ist*D, ist*DS, ist*DL, ist*DS2, istDL2 K100D, K110D(K100D w/o SR) K10D, K100D super, K200D K-m (K2000 in Eur) K-x, K-r, K-7 and finally the K-5
I might have missed a few. The ist series was straight forward, except try searching for the camera with that stupid * in the name. The K100D was the first S/R camera and that series isn't too bad to follow logically, except that a 110 is a crippled 100. But since then I haven't been able to follow. Why does K-x follow K-m, but the next one is K-r? Then there is the K-7 which followed the K20D??? All I can say is that it doesn't follow logically in english.

NaCl(but it might make sense in Japanese, Japan is a BIG market for Pentax)H2O

Wow. The K-5 looks super-sweet, but that price puts it way out of my range. But, I'll be happy to look at the falling prices of used K-7's as the addicts jump ship. I'll finally be able to upgrade my K-10D!

Does anyone know how long before a sample lands in someone's hands? Nothing on DPReview yet.

This is shown as fact at the top of pentaxforums and on the non-forum page.... so is it 100% or not?

Do you also want the humvee that that monster lens would have to be mounted on?
Would it be much heavier than the Sigma 200-500 f/2.8? As a prime, at least it could do with less elements

The thread title should give you a clue. Until Pentax actually announce the camera and specifications I would say it's not 100%. Probably pretty close but only Pentax and certain people under a NDA know for sure.

Right, but pentaxforums didn't have that at the top until today as far as I can tell so I figured I might have missed something

I expect that they will be putting Prime ][ in this, because it's in the Kx and Kr.
That's a big deal, because the high iso and long exposure noise reduction is much better than the Prime.
Much as I love my Pentax gear, noise has been an issue. Nikon was def much better especially at high ISO, however Prime][ seems to have solved that issue.

what spec do you love?

Hi,

I am glad to see Pentax coming out with 2 new cameras. My DS2 got wet and died 2 months ago and I need a new camera. Might pickup the k-r or k-5.

People seem really excited about this possible K-5. It doesn't seem that different than the K-7. What spec really makes it that amazing? Is the new sensor going to be alot cleaner and have more dynamic range?

Just curious.

We'll have wait to for Photokina for the official announcement, but it sure sounds good and the price point is right on considering the specification and competition. I'll be happy to have it for sports and wildlife instead of the old 1D Mk II N I'm using now. I hope it's the same size as the K20 as it fits my hands better and I can use my grips too. Of course I've been hoping for this for awhile now.

BTW, it weighs only 2 g more than a K20.

What you may be missing is in the finer details of technology. From ordinary noise control up to ISO 6400 to supposedly excellent noise control up to ISO 12800 (with the option to go to 25600) is a vast improvement, and will transform each and every lens you own in terms of what you can capture with it.

From SAFOX VIII+ to supposed SAFOX IX+ (that exists in the 'pro' model 645D), there is claimed benefits in AF-C tracking - another bone of contention Pentaxians have had with Pentax dSLRs to date.

These two factors alone are significant leaps and makes it a competitive model - then you have the supposed increased number of AF points, 2 SD card slots and higher megapixel rating (for what it's worth) amongst other minor but useful improvements...

Take your pick, both the K-r and K-5 will be impressive bodies...

Just as the K-x has a wider expanded ISO range, from 100 to 12800, than its built-in one :-)!
