About the sync speed

I wonder if the 180/250 sync speed mystery is resolved simply so that Pentax will release a firmware update later with the new flashes?

So technically the shutter is already capable to 1/250 but somehow the firmware is still under work. Would this be the most simple explanation?

if that is the case then Pentax has an awful lot of explaining to do. For instance, why they hell didn't they let us use 1/250th in the first place?

ah now I understand the confusion. The shutters synch speed is independent of the duration of peak output of the flash. The duration of which is referred to as the T number. All the shutter has to do is get out of the way the instant peak flash output occurs, the fastest speed the shutter can accomplish this is referred to as the X-synch shutter speed.

If Pentax comes out with a new flashes especially if they make something along the lines of This with a Radio Wireless flash triggering system solution I will be extremely happy. But knowing pentax, my hope for such a thing has the same chance as a snowball in hell.

Linhof? never used them professionally, mainly because their cameras don't have a great scope of camera movements Like the Ebony and Sinar cameras I use, but their cameras were much smaller as a result.Though I will say the newer cameras look very promising.
The Linhof has and still is serving me very well. The Kardan GT, I am using professionally a lot, holds the middle between a full studio LF camera and a device light, rough and versatile enough on location. The indirect yaw free movements and the telescopic bench makes it a joy to work with. But, yes, the Sinar P2 is a top of the notch instrument but my old Norma isn't bad either…

But that aside, triggering a studio flash system can be done with a small and simple little flash on the hot shoe. Just cover the flash window with an opaque piece of IR filter, like the one from LEE Filters, and the IR sensor on the generators will 'see' and respond on that 'impulse'. But, I hope that the IRSimple on the K-5 will do that from now. And, perhaps, will do more, like accepting the steering of the camera with a IR remote control device, something like the one Multiblitz has, to control and operate the generators…

for example with a Metz flash.

I mean that if K-5 has a whole new shutter, and the higher sync speed is just for k-5? So the old firmware is the bottle neck here...

Guys, if you enjoy speculating you could continue to speculate. But we could also start the head scratching and speculating once the 1/250 are confirmed. Remember that this "spec" came part and parcel with the 18 AF points rumour which has been heavily questioned in the meantime.

Quite right. But if hoya/pentax has to be going daft if they are expecting people to buy new flash units in order to use 1/250th Synch speed, 1/250th isn't much faster than 1/180th. The difference between the two synch speeds makes more if a difference for those who use telephoto 200mm and longer like I do.

I call BS on that. Synch speed is dependant on the Shutter mechanism, not on the flash unit. Unless the user has activated High speed synch. The 1DMKIV which synchs at 1/300th is the fastest natively supported synch speed possible with canon speed lights.
Canon EOS 1D Mark III Digital SLR Camera Review

The 1D III's max X-sync speed is now 1/300 (with EX Speedlites). "For the X-sync contact, the mechanical contact has been eliminated to prevent contact scorching and wear. By employing PR signals for the electronic X-sync contact (a semiconductor switch), reliability is improved. By optimizing the sync timing, an X-sync speed of 1/300 sec. is now attained with EX series Speedlites. With non-EX Speedlites, the X-sync speed will be 1/250 sec., the same as the EOS-1D Mark II N's."

The original 1D actually syncs at 1/500.

K7, Kx, and 7d

But "everyone knows" how noisy it is, except for those who actually own and use one.

Excellent 3200 prints and decent 6400 ones, yes thank you.
I owned the 7d for 3 months before deciding to sell it and buy a Kx, and convert to IR with also buying the 15, and 35 limited for what I sold the 7d.
The 7d is a great. ISO at 6400 was comparable to the Kx and better than the K7. The Kx however is better at 12,800 than the 7d. I only shoot in RAW and always turn off NR.

Yeah, 12800 is not a place I like to venture, so I believe the Kx can outperform it there since it looks like a hell of a sensor.
