Any rumours on new super tele's for 2010?

Anyone know if Pentax are planning to release any new super tele's this year or next year?

To the point: no.

I haven't run across anything but the 35 and 18-125 rumors.

Be nice to see some long, (500mm+) lenses for /from Pentax. Or at least a working TC to go with the DA200 and 300mm lenses.

I want to reach out with a prime to 500 to 600mm for my surfing photos.

A 300 or 400 might be good especially with a 1.4 or 2 converter...

When I say a 300 I mean an F2.8 not the current F4 DA*... nice lens but too slow for bird photography if you are using a converter... might work for photographing an elephant that has been nailed to the ground but for small birds moving about in thickets only an F2.8 will get anything usable. (Maybe the F4 lens combined with a very high ISO camera might work too??)

Hopefully if they do decide to produce a 400 it will be a fast lens...

Did you ever use the DA*300/4, with and without a TC, for birding?
I went to visit your Birding Site and couldn't find any sample shots with that combo.

I use this lens and a TC nearly 100% of the time and getting good results. Yes, a 300/2.8 would be nice; even a 400/4 (if that would exist) better.

I have briefly used my brothers DA* but found it a little slow for the really small stuff... might just be my settings though?

I would love to get my grubby paws on an older FA* 300 F2.8... not easy to find in SA though.

Where do you use your lens with the TC? Is it more out in the open where you have good light or in thick bush?
(Just having a look at your photo gallery... wow! stunning images!!!!)

OK, having looked properly at some settings you are using I should try get out there again... you are shooting similar sized birds in dimly lit areas and getting very good results!

Thanks for your reply, Gordon.

Well, I use the DA*300 "on its own" (no TC) when I am roaming in thick wooded areas, in search of small birds such as the kinglets and the like. Also, during low light conditions ... no TC, or hardly ever.
Yes, in good light, I do take the TC out, not often enough though. I will try to dish out some I took this summer using that combo and post them somewhere ... be patient as I am not very good at posting picture here.

Either way, I try keeping the shutter speed to a reasonably fast setting. I try not going under 1/500s but it does happen that I have to take chances at much less than that. Since I hardly ever use a tripod nor a monopod, I try bracing myself wherever I can. (Can't justify carrying a tripod on unbeaten trails or on slippery sea shore rocks covered with weeds).

I too wish I could get my hands on a 300/2.8 ! With a 1.7X A-FA adapter, this would actually at 510mm/5.6 ??? Am I doing the math right?

Cheers.

JP
