The K-x K-r and K-5

Considering where they prices this camera, and the fact that it is touted as the mid-level Pentax, it is quite probable that they will keep the K-x as entry, K-r as mid and K-5 as advanced (Mike Lows editor of WhatDigitalCamera said something similar in its hands-on preview: Videoclips about Pentax K-r Digital Camera ) . That will leave the K-7 as a discontinued model.

Likely, but not necessary.

Pentax might instead follow this model:
K-x: entry-level
K-r: mid-level
K-7: advanced amateur
K-5: professional

leaves the k-7 above the k-r though and that just doesn't sit right with the k-r having higher iso/lower noise and faster continous shooting

not sure sure the ergonomics and weather sealing of the k-7 would be enough to justify it over the k-r

the k-x certainly does have a place simply because its so cheap now

Pentax KX with 18-55mm DAL - Buy the Pentax KX From a Pentax Pro Centre
389 practically giving them away

3 camera's would be a more obvious lineup and the k-7 is the oldest of the bunch

I'm personally not so sure.
The K-r seems to just follow the same line of development as the K-x, while the K-5 is based much on the K-7 for its own improvements, making me feel as if the K-r remains the new entry-level and the K-5 the new flagship enthusiast APS-C camera. It's conceivable for me to have more than one entry-level body and more than one mid-level body selling at the same time, only difference being price. To me, a 'pro' body (however way that is defined) would look more like a FF body with comparable features to the Canikon FFs. I wouldn't call the D300 pro, and thus in the same vain I don't consider the K-5 as such either. The 645D, now that's a pro body, but just in a different league...

Anyway, who cares? Just bring on the K-5!

There's much more to a camera than sensor and WR, a whole lot more.

I agree. That's what the official retailer here says. K-7 will stay as it is and its price.

K-7 is discontinued someone else who has a shoppe said. (as in officially listed as)

I really don't see the point in keeping the k-7 in the line up anymore either.

What exactly makes the K5 "professional"?
Most pros's that I know use FF.

Such classifications are purely a manufacturer's discretion(what they consider pro) by their own line. However, for all intended purposes, I believe the only camera Pentax announced as the professional level is the 645D.

However that isn't to say a K-5 can't be used professionally either.

IMHO, looks like
- Kr: low to mid
- K-5: mid to high
- 645D: pro

Leaving room for a necessarily upcoming mirrorless
"necessarily" meant as where the market is going in the entry (to mid) level.
Of course, there are people professionally using P&Ss (and also amateurishly using pro cameras...), so the level is to be intended as relative...

Me too, but in shop view there is the stock to be exhausted.

To elaborate: some (not all) sellers have contracts with local distributors. They can't say "it's discontinued" to the public, they'll sell the stock at reasonable prices.

with the price of the Kr so close to the K7, one won't sell as well and that would be the k7.
as good ergonomics and features, it's a reality that ISO, FPS, AF, etc of the Kr will trump it.

so i don't think pentax is going for a 5 tier DSLR.

more likely 4
Kx, Kr, K5, 645D

I guess it depends on the cost per unit for Pentax to keep making the K-7 or K-x and to still turn a profit. The Nikon D40 and D40X stayed on the market years as a budget entry level camera. While the D90 replacement D7000/8000 is specd to surpass the D300s in some regard I don't see the D300s going away any time soon. It is a workhorse and backbone for Nikon. If anything, they'll drop the price and keep it in the lineup for a while yet.

For the most part the choice in Pentaxia was clear, either Product A or B and sometimes C like the K200D. That's a little easier than trying to decide between a D300S, D90, D5000, D3100 or D3000 and on the other side of things 7D, 60D, 50D, T2i, T1i, XSi and XS. I see no reason, aside from slight confusion on specs, to cut the K-7 or K-x right away. If there's only $100 difference or less between the K-r and K-7 then you make a choice, faster FPS and lower ISO noise or a more rugged WR body. Otherwise you're stuck with "Well I want weather sealing and faster FPS but I don't have an extra $1000" and the K-7 is a compromise. Canikon do it so why can't we.
