The Big Mac was a marketing success. Probably the top selling burger of all time. It must be the best burger ever made.

.

Interesting that the FF D700 has more average daily users on fickr than the top 10 APS-C pentax bodies combined. (K-x + K-5 + K10D + K20D + K-7 + K-r + K200D + K100D + K-m + K100DSuper.)

And the D90 has more than twice as many users as the D700. Not sure what these numbers mean, except that Pentax has a dismal market share world wide?

At least the most-used Olympus (E-PL1) has a smaller user base than the most popular Pentax (K-x) (and more surprising, perhaps, it has just barely more users than the K-5).

(Another surprise: Ricoh GR Digital 3 is with 200 flickr users more popular than I thought)

D700 vs K-5 vs Ricoh's Pentax layoffs

This is a great link, thank you !

Seems to me full frame dslrs aren't the uncommon, rare cameras Pentax owners say they are.

I'm still so deeply in love with my D700 that I haven't bought any Canon Eos item in a 2&1/2 years.

I'm going on 3 years without spending money on new Pentax items either, due to my old tech D700.

I've been building out my Nikon System, the only system that I still buy new items for.

I have high hopes D700 replacement allows me to sell off all my Canon Eos and Pentax gear.

I look foward to owning just one camera brand.

If there were no D700 replacement due, I'd buy another D700 instead of buying a Pentax K-5 or Canon 5D Mark II.

I expect no full frame camera from Ricoh, instead I see the usual layoffs that occur when Pentax Corporation gets officially bought out, again.

I could be wrong of course and Ricoh will announce full frame roadmap on October 1st 2011.

I'm willing to wait 3 more weeks to see what Ricoh's Pentax System plans are once they've officially bought out the imaging brand from Hoya for 124 Million Dollars.

Add up all the APS-C activity versus the FF activity and FF may squeak in at 4% weighted for relative age of cameras.

That coincides with sales data. FF is estimated at 5% of the total DSLR market. Unit volumes of MF DSLRS (645D, Phase One, Hassy) and Leica are so minimal they are rounding errors in aggregate sales data.

If people vote with their $$$'s, then quantitative economics says yes. After all someone actually had to make the effort to go to a MickeD's and place an order from a menu list of items.

It's worth keeping in mind that the flickr camera finder numbers may not be totally accurate. The data comes from flickr successfully parsing the EXIF of uploaded JPGs. Sometimes that EXIF isn't available or the parse doesn't work.

Not surprising though and that put into perspective why Pentax probably won't come with a FF body very soon. If Pentax has an overall market share below 5% and FF has an overall 5%. It could mean that a Pentax FF would have 5% of 5% = 0,25% ! Maybe even less if the camera is not "successful".

Those market share numbers are not static, and would probably move in another tier. The main reason Pentax is at 5% in DSLR right now is because of the massive retail presence Canon and Nikon have in he big boxes and elsewhere in aps-c and below, and because of their marketing campaigns in support of that.

Pentax entered MFD with the 645D, and now reportedly have almost 50% of that market (depending on who you ask - some figures suggest they doubled the existing market.) There's no way a K-1 would grab anything close to that share, but that illustrates how things change when you move up out of the retail-dominated tiers.

All this really tells you is that the D700 is one tasty Big Mac (and highlights how the "FF is mainly for 'pros'" canard that still gets trotted out in internet forums from time to time is silly.)

Uhh... you're seeing or you're hoping for "the usual layoffs"?
Anyway, since Hoya already trimmed all the fat there's no need for Ricoh to do the same.

There's some 'Q' fat that could yet be trimmed.

A good thing you're not taking any decision, then; normally one shouldn't start with the revenue sources
Should I remind you the Q is selling quite well, on the Japanese market?
