It could, but there are some big reasons why it probably won't.
1) Business is business. You want to differentiate your newer products form your older ones ina manner that encourages upgrading. The AF in older cameras isn't broken, so why improve it for free?
2) Just because there are still 11 points doesn't mean those 11 points are the same exact hardware with the same exact capabilities.
3) If the improvements are in the algorithms, they may be more CPU hungy, and might only be an improvement on faster processors. So your older camera might not have enough power to make it an actual improvement.

Exactly. I use more than the center point a lot, but I can't imagine a huge benefit from 7 more points. Now a LOT more points, I could imagine some software tricks to make it much more useful, especially for action photography. But you can also make 11 points work better for action photography than they have in the past.
