ok, how about:

853 x 480 resolution? instead of useless 640x424

853x480 60/50/30/25/24 with minimal jell-o effect would be awesome for me.

DVD resolution still looks pretty good on my 32" LCD TV. And DVD file sizes are still way smaller to Upload/Download and share with people.

Yeah you can reduce the resolution of 720/1080 in post. But why not a native 853x480? It will be way easier for the camera to handle.

Because the sensor can't do pixel binning on-chip. So with a lower resolution you get larger gaps in-between pixels, downscaling after recording at thigher resolution should result in superior image quality and less moiré.

In the following example, "." is a blind pixel, and "o" a pixel that gets recorded.

1080p on the 16 MP sensor looks like this:

o . . o . . . o . . o . . . o . . o . . . o . . o . . . o . . o . . . o . . o . . . o . . o . . . o . . o . . . o
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

480p would look like this:

Looks like no full manual control in video mode.

25fps only? Looks like they don't care about the US too much...
25fps is terrible for editing. Maybe they can do 24fps in fw update...

How would you know? It could say Auto, Fixed and Manual right after "Movie Aperture Control".

It says "Auto" and "Fixed" (which means: Av), like in the K-7. It wouldn't make sense to call the option aperture control if it meant auto/manual exposure

I am sure, but I haven't seen a K-5 in person yet, but everything else would be illogical.

I am pretty sure that shutter angle remains fixed at 180° (that is, 1/50 and 1/60 respectively) as long as selected aperture and auto-gain (I. e. auto ISO sensitivity) permit. This was the case with K-7 and K-x, and it's both logical and easy to implement.

Still, manual control would IMHO have been not only nice, but a necessity for not alienating the video crowd.

Because we already have manual aperture control. That's what Fixed is. It's shutter speed and gain that we have no control over, and there's no reason that those would be in the aperture control menu.

I think it is 25fps for 1080p and 25fps or 30fps for 720p. I guess 1080p @ 30fps is too fast for the sensor to handle. You're correct about your 24p comment of course.

If you want HD video and AF with the same sensor get the new Sony SLT-A55V for $749.99.

I have hooked up my K-7 to my girlfriends' TV this morning, and it seems as if what I posted about switching aspect ratio in movie mode was correct. The TV doesn't give lots of details on input resolution though. I thought I could test on my monitor (which gives very detailed statistics), but I don't have a HDMI->DVI converter handy.

I think it's becoming clear that Pentax doesn't care about video except as a bullet point on the spec sheet.

or the D7000...seems to be more advanced than the K-5 in my opinion. (and costs less)
