K-5 manual video controls - KILLER FEATURE

I want to state:

If Pentax have delivered manual control over video (aperture/shutter/iso), and offers either 25p or 24p frame rates, I will buy a K-5.

In a heart beat.

I have been waiting for this development for years. I recall in film school wishing that I could get a 35mm SLR with a motor drive that would do 24fps and take a bulk-load film back. Once DSLRs arrived, it was only a matter of time for them to tackle video. When the K20D could do a burst mode, I wished that it could shoot just a LITTLE faster and a LITTLE LONGER. The K-7 nearly had me ... but it crippled the control of video.

According to the rumors, the K-5 looks sets to capture my filmmaking heart. I wish/hope that it does a true 24p ... but I'm OK with 25p if I have to (just slow down the footage and sound by a few percent in post.)

I can't wait to shoot HD and mount up my SMC Takumars... or my Sigma 15-30... This is very exciting. I have already sold a bunch of cameras and lenses to make room for the K-5.

I hope Pentax delivers, and that other filmmakers pick up a Pentax. There is no reason to leave this field to Canon. The 5D Mark II is not the world's best cine camera. This could be a real boon to Pentax.

Although video features are getting better, there's still a grain of salt in it.... no 60fps... Damn manufacturers are always leaving something to make sure that the stupid consumer buys the next generation... and next... and next..... oh well... at leas AF is starting to get usable... in A55...

And they left out 120fps at 2160p, so I can't see myself using it either.

I am waiting for FF and 1080p60. I have a Panasonic HDC-TM700 3MOS camcorder that shoots 1080p60 and I just love watching the videos in slow motion on my HDTVs.

in fact the K7 had a kind of manual control, I was the first to scream about the lack of it but with the user mode twich it's pretty easy to acheive with some practice and the jpeg motion format is a pleasure to use in comparaison of the h264 (poor color space)

but im still hoping increadible improvement in the k5 too!

I do like watching my K-7 1536x1024 videos on my iPod Touch Retina display since they both have a 4:3 aspect ratio and it fills 100% of the 960x640 3.5" display.

That hardly qualifies as practical, official, or even usable for more than novelty. And of course it's still not manual, it's only locked auto exposure. There is no way you can select shutter speed in movie mode on the K-7.

The exclusion of a 24fps option is a bit short-sighted, considering that the Canon 7D can do 1080p at 24/25/30fps, and 720p at 50/60fps...
The K-5 should really be able to do all these modes and more, but there's always the possibility of a firmware upgrade. What would be really good is being able to select an arbitrary frame rate value (e.g. from 5 to 100fps.) That would be a unique and useful feature (to some) that would set it apart from the rest.

It's good for K-7 owners that there was some kind of workaround ... but like with the first-gen Canon video DSLRs, it's a hack and you have to play with pointing the camera at different light levels and then locking it. Not cool.

True manual exposure control, like we have when shooting stills, is the way to rock a cine camera. (Oh, and by the way, autofocus is not a big issue. Manual focus is good, and live HDMI out is even better so you can pull focus with a big monitor!)

Selecting an arbitrary frame rate below 30 wouldn't be really useful for anybody. Selecting an arbitrary higher framerate might not be possible (or easy, or cheap).

What would set it apart would be the option to select shutter angle (shutter speed). Not that an angle other than 180° is used very often, but why not?

And of course full manual. Also for audio.

I wouldn't get your hopes up about the jello.
As the K-5 [most likely] has the same sensor as the Sony SLT-A55, I would say no. See the last video on the linked page:

Rolling shutter is very anoying in some circumstances, but in most, it doesn't really matter.

What would matter, though, is high-res, low-lag HDMI output.

And what would be icing on the cake would be Zebras, Focus Peaking, Pixel Binning and well-executed, smooth, high-res digital zoom. And RAW...
