I am very surprised since a few days. How many people was complaining that a Pentax FF camera for 2000USD would way too much expensive for most Pentaxian and that would kill pentax to go that way, while now (almost) everybody is praising an APS-C body estimated at 1800USD and singing they will buy one or two of these babies?!?
Do you realize the market price of this camera? It is almost the price for a FF body in other brands, with only a few more features than K7!
It sounds insane to me...

Current cost of upgrading my current kit with Pentax K-5's: $3398.00 CAD
Current cost of upgrading my current with with D700's: $4498.00 CAD

Should we even both talking lens costs?

BTW. the D700 prices are mature market value. While the K-5 is not. But there was plenty of overhead so I didn't even bother to adjust prices to make it reasonable.

Well then Olympus must be beyond insane with their boring E-5...

But let's see what we can get for 1400 EUR in Germany: I searched for the Sony 850 body, but it doesn't seem to be available below 1750 EUR, that's not exactly the same price. The Canon 7D and the Nikon D300s seem to be available for about the same price as the K-5, though. But who knows what the cheapest price for the K-5 will be some weeks after release.

Based on my quick conversion, the K-5 works out to be at/or around $1573.00 CAD
Not to shabby

If you have a nice full frame lens collection then body price of 5D MkII is becoming attractive especially if you compare it to the 7D price.
- I have some old less attractive Canon SLR lens and am planning to go for K-r, hopefully soon for not much more than 500-600 Euro, so I can also by a nice lens...

Given that the initial price of the K-7 was 1499CAD$, I expect the K-5 to be between that and 1599CAD$. So your quick conversion makes sense to me.

The rumoured specs have me very interested in the K-5. However I will not be an early adopter this time around (I pre-ordered my K10D and my K-7, and paid the full initial price for both). I am not ready to upgrade this fall anyway.

Thanks.

These are the sites that we usually use as reference on my french forum (Le Grand Forum). But time to time, Amazon or some other small shops have even better offers. The most difficult is to know when!
On my side I will buy very soon a 5DMkII + 24-105mm f/4 for about 270.000 yens / 2.500 euros in my Yamada Denki shop. Not the cheaper price on my Island, but it is a real shop. And warranty extension "1+4 years" is 10.500 yens / 98 euros!! )

Re-reading my list I must conclude that I'm not too interested in the new models.

All I really want is a K-7 the size/weight of a K-x, with improved video (just made my first film!) and ergonomic improvements that likely will never happen. So I guess I will wait and buy a discounted K-7.

I'm trying this idea out myself. I have been totally convinced the The Most Important Improvement for me personally, in whatever camera, had to be much better low-light, high-ISO performance than I get from my K20D (which is, actually, pretty good). To this end, I've been considering the new Pentax models (K-5 and K-r) and have also been looking seriously at some new and not-quite-new cameras from Sony. (The A33/A55 are exciting pieces of hardware, with ergonomic shortcomings compared to the K20D but with apparently MUCH better focusing and much better high-ISO performance, too.)

Anyway, switching to Sony would be really expensive. Adding a Sony camera to work with alongside my K20D and Pentax lenses is still a possibility, and might in fact be the way I go, but I can't decide if it's a safe move (hedging my bets about the future) or simply crazy (working with 2 bodies that work so differently might be nutty).

The cost of the K-5, even assuming a sudden drop of a couple hundred dollars from the MSRP, is pretty high. So NOW, I'm thinking that, although I've passed up the K-7 until now and felt good about that decision, perhaps this is finally the time to buy one.

One of the main advantages of the K-7 over the K20D is the vastly improved display. This was one of the few things that I really did want from the K-7. I've seen the displays side by side, and the bigger, much higher-res display really is very nice. There are several other smaller, but nice things about the K-7 that I would value.

So the question for me now is, what's so much better about the K-5 over the K-7?

I have the ability to make a purchase now (i.e. in the next 30-45 days, say). But the K-5 is clearly going to cost fair bit more—around $600 more. Aside from the improved high-ISO performance, what makes the K-5 $600 better than the K-7? (NOTE: I am ignoring the improvements in video. I do not care about video.)

Slightly better fps, slightly better autofocus, slightly better weather-sealing, these things don't add up to $600 in value, as far as I can tell. What am I missing?

although I still have my wallet ready for the k5,

the D7000 leak looks interesting
Is This The Upcoming Nikon D7000?

if they really price this at $1200 w/ the rumored specs, (39 af points, mag alloy, etc), that would be hard to ignore.

OTOH, that would also kill their own D300 sales.

Maybe that's their intent and they will unveil a sub-2K$ FF...? it would explain why the D300s was just an updated D300 with video.

While I couldn't afford the $1600 price we originally thought the new K-5 was going to be, this brings it down closer to the value conscious among us, which I believe describes most Pentax shooters. We'll have to wait to be sure, but it sounds like Pentax is doing it again, offering more for less than the other big names in the business. Thanks Pentax.
