what i'd like to see in the kr/k5 is how the new SAFOX IX performs.
hopefully, it's just not market speak and the AFC really works well.

d7000 and k5 are really spec'd close and d7000 will probably kill the d300 sales as well.

so where is the k5 leveled against? not the D300 anymore, but the d7000

Pentax marketing "DO SOMETHING!"

And pictures itself are extremely poor as official sample photos of new camera. Especially the third one.
It's a very poor demonstration of the electronic level of the D7000

and the sample pictures made by Chase Jarvis are taken with some pro lenses as can be seen in video on his blog.
AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm for the first 2
AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm last one.

http://blog.chasejarvis.com/blog/2010/09/nikon-d7000/

if we user lenses that cost x2+ than the body, the picture may be very good.

The D7000 does have AF-adjust, en to FalconEye, I've not encountered anything wrong with my D300 at -20 Celsius. But I did at 10 above zero when the lens contacts were dirty..

The thing about the iso sensitivity is interesting. Usually, Nikon offers max high iso in 3 1/3 EV staps above the normals max. E.g. the d300(s) real max is iso 3200, and H1,H2 and H3 will give you iso 6400. But if iso 12800 and 25600 are extra's, the same implementation would demand H1 to H6. I do not think this is something we should expect, so thay may be using 1EV staps above iso 6400 only. This may be the result of the base iso 100, effectively lowering the max iso, and this predicts that iso 25600 will be fairly useless.
I think a new D400 will again have base iso at 200, with L1,L2 and L3to give you virtual iso 100. It will have max high iso at 12.800, and with H1,2 and 3 giving you slighty better top high iso performance at 25600 then the D7000 and k5 will do. Given the fact that the number of memory banks was too small o nthe D300(s), I expect at least 8 banks. As the d700 does have AF adjust, the D400 will have more sophisticated AF adjust, e.g. like on the Oly's. Furthermore, they will come up with an AF module that needs to beat the current one. Basically with more cross sensors and better algorithms to speed up and improve tracking/face recognition.
If the rumors are true that there might also be a new generation DX sensors coming, we could be surprized to see an 18 Mp sensor in the D400 with the same performances as the 16 Mp one.
This restores camera ranking as they were before, and Pentax will take it usual place. The only party to really change things will be Sony. They may be producing a A7x/xx model that will rival anything at the top end of DX cameras.
The good thing is ,however, we as consumers are by no means poor men's photographers if we were to use a D7000 or a K5 !

The ironic thing is that a lot of the features people seem to be excited for about the D7000 were already available on the K-7 and will be so on the K-5.

Ultimately, the only two major things I can see the D7000 having that the K-5 doesn't have is AF in video and the two card slots. Otherwise, they seem like eerily similar cameras, and I don't see why the K-5 should necessarily have to be markedly "better," it will just be strong in its own areas. Don't worry so much about the small price difference if indeed there is one, pick your camera based on the lenses you want to use with it, and go from there.

Actually, who I really feel bad for is Olympus. They announce basically (what looks like on paper) an E-3 clone on the same day the Nikon D7000 is announced? Whose idea was that?

don't forget the 39pt AF.

pentax yet has to prove that SAFOX IX+ is not just marketspeak in terms of
performance.

and after that real 18/19 AF point fake news fiasco, SAFOX IX better perform!

It will be the strong point in favor of Nikon (but AF in video doesn't matter if it's CD-AF). But Pentax has the SR and I hope they will improve it again to make it an even stronger proposition. They need to have a big lead on this one. Nikon doesn't have that many VR lenses (compared to Canon for example) and even some pro lenses don't have it (like the 17-55mm f/2.8).

Ah yes and the quiet shutter, let's hope Pentax capitalize on this. If they had a good marketing department they would call it "USS" (ultrasmooth shutter) or something as ridiculous as a name but that would make everyone notice about that feature.

So you're holding Pentax responsible for the false rumors about its auto focus system? I don't see why that's their responsibility, although I guess they could do a better job of leaking their rumors

I personally expect the K-5's AF to be improved over the K-7, but probably not enough to be as good as the D300s. In other words, I expect the AF of the D7000 and K-5 to be about the same for all practical purposes**, kind of like the K-7 and the Nikon D90. And even if the K-5's autofocus somehow is better than the D7000's or vice versa, will it really be tons better? I somehow doubt it. What it comes down to is that all cameras are from all manufacturers are getting pretty good.

** I don't have the expertise of some on this board, but the description of the D7000s autofocus system placed 9 of the crosstype sensors in the center, which I believe is what SAFOX does as well?

Funny thing is only 9 are cross type (probably the centre column similar to the d300 style). And if you want to reduce the complexity of the AF system (depending on usage), you can reduce them to 11 "well spaced" ones. Sound familiar?

Ah yes, the silent shutter! My favorite "hidden" feature of the K-7.

But don't you know that Pentax is a humble company that likes to keep its best features secret?

LOL that doesn't help me. I have nothing against a d400, I however expect Nikon to go straight d7000 to d700s/d800.
I'm very curious what could nikon add on top of d7000 to make a d400 (nô sarcasm here, genuine question).

That is an interesting question as we go into next year. Last year the conventional wisdom was that APS-C had hit its upper limit and that FF would soon take over in the $1,500 price range. But this year, since last Photokina, really, we've seen nothing but new strides in APS-C camera development. So the question is now, what next? Will next year be the year of full frame or mirrorless or both?

Feature-wise, I'm not sure, either. But price-wise, they definitely have room. Amazon has the D7K at $1199 (I just checked), and the D700 at $2400 (roughly). Obviously plenty of spread there. If there is a D400 coming, it will obviously be a camera to reckon with.

I'm not leaving Pentax and I will have a K5 very soon, but I gotta be honest, that D7K looks pretty sweet, at least on paper.
