I am not an expert on Nikon and their lens pricing, but the little I have seen makes it seem that most of their lenses are significantly more expensive. Like others have said, it might depend on how invested you are in your glass.

Honestly, I think anybody hoping/expecting more out of the K-5 than what is already rumored is going to be pretty disappointed. It's fun to think that there might be some big surprise, but in this day and age I think the basic info is already out there.

I'm personally still excited and happy to shoot Pentax :-)

If the d7000 is $1200 usd then the K-5 will have to be that much or less. Despite being a little better over all. Just due to the brands perceived value. Unless pentax are planing on changing that.

No, its actually 1350 Amazon.com: Nikon D7000 16.2MP DX-Format CMOS Digital SLR with 3.0 Inch LCD (Body Only): Electronics

Its already discounted 150US

Also note the D90 was released at
999 October 2008.
899 September 2010

Pentax released K-7 at
$1150 October 2009
899ish September 2010

You guys tell me where the K-5 price will be when you decide to upgrade your gear.

the moment they are within 50-100 US close to each other, I think the price issue will disappear.

I believe it was like this because the D90 was a success and the K7 a flop (in terms of sale)

Nikon has a hit with the D7000. so similarly spec'd with the k5

any AF micro adjust?
if pentax marketing is smart, they'll have to adjust their price of the K5 pretty quick, otherwise, pentax is foobar

edit: d7000, not d7100, too much excitement

And if things stay the same then the process will repeat itself.
Show me a Pentax camera who's price did not fall dramatically in the first year. Even the K-x price fell. And that was cheap.
What I am saying is that there is plenty of time before release for either Pentax to discount the camera.

No they are not, Pentax quality lenses are way cheaper than Nikon's. Until now, there was a gap between the kit 18-55 and the much more expensive 17-50, it will be filled with 18-135, provided it is a good lens (for its price), the 35/2.4 may also attract those users (at least not move them to Nikon because of Nikon's 35/1.8)

People buying the K-5 or D7000 will look at the system, unlike people buying the K-r or D3100.

Its an improvement for Nikon IMO, the 12 MP sensor is far worse in terms of color.
This bodes well for the K-5.

And pictures itself are extremely poor as official sample photos of new camera. Especially the third one.

I have to agree. The biggest knock on Nikon for me is not their cameras, it is that their upper end lenses are priced amazingly high. Yes, they auto focus well and are sweet lenses, but there is nothing like the DA * zooms or the DA limited primes for anywhere near the cost. Nikon seems to have two levels -- upper end and low end consumer glass and almost nothing in between. Unless you buy third party (Sigma, Tokina) that can add considerable cost to your purchase.

Did anyone address the fact that, in comparison to the D90, the D7K has the ability to meter with manual focus lenses? That is also a bit bad for pentax, given their dedication to support of legacy lenses - now Nikon has started to offer the same.
And there is a *lot* of AI glass laying about.

Not switching yet, but hoping this baby helps lower the K5 price sooner than expected

- ¥ 139,000 (too high price - $1625 , but it could be $1400 at US market))
the release price for D7000 in Japan is ¥ 138,000, which is only ¥1,000 less than the leaked price for K5 in Japan.

so K5 should have the similar price with D7000. NOT THAT HIGH AS SOMEONE THOUGHT

On the spec sheet, both cameras look indistinguishable!

In common:
Mag-Alloy body, WR, 100% Prism, 2 wheel operation, 150k shutter, 16MP, ISO100-25k, 6 or 7fps, etc.

Pro K-5:
SR, In-body HDR (if Nikon did not catch up), Size?, Grip?

Pro D7000:
$200 less, Tethering?, 39AF points, Video-AF (if Pentax did not catch up), Dual SD (if Pentax did not catch up)
Now, that the spec is out, both cameras look even closer. I'll add in:

K-5 size & weight:
131 x 97 x 73mm and 754g+ (with batt.)

D7000 size & weight:
132 x 105 x 77mm and 780g (8mm taller but same width)

The K-5 may be capable of 1080p@25 D7000 and a notch higher fps but other than that ...

Other features "copied" from the K-7 are:

True MLU, mode dial lock, mirror-less shooting ("quiet" mode), 9 cross-type AF sensors , full support for legacy lenses, 921k 3" screen, 1/8000s shutter, HDMI out etc.

We'll see how both cameras actually "feel" and perform (buffers etc.). The D7000 has more sensors for AF and metering and we'll need benchmarks to translate this into practical data. And yes, the D7000 will support a grip and tethering.

But take it from a positive point of view:

Nikon did not succeed in beating Pentax which is a much smaller company, in developping the successor to their cash cow product. Their product isn't better, just on par and it does not have SR or the -10°C weather spec.
