I hope K5 will either cheaper or outperform D7000.. if the rumored specs are so close together, I don't see how Pentax to gain the mid-level market

Try a $500 difference

I believe the estimated retail price of the K-5 is currently $1699. The retail price of the Nikon D7000 is $1199 (body only). Pentax must cut the price of the K-5 by many hundreds. Thank you, Nikon, for providing awesome competition! Our bank accounts will be a little less empty after the purchase of a K-5.

Fact, not Faith

It is fact, not faith, that the retail price of the D7000 is $1199, at least according to DPReview and Amazon.com. I do have great faith, however, that the retail price of the K-5 is going to be slashed because of this competition.

If you can't understand logic behind Nikon's numbering, try understanding the logic behind Pentax's numbering... K5 replacing K7.... Daaaaaaaa......

That being said, Nikon did screw up their numbering right from the beginning of digital... but they seem to be getting a hold of it finally....

So far D7000 looks really nice, uses the same grip that D90/D80 have... I really hope that Nikon recycled a lot of D300's parts in it... Because the original D90 is a great and solid body, just been lacking some D300's performance....
correction... Nikon has NOT screwed up it's numbering, they are just redoing their lineup. D7000 is now their top Camera that will eventually replacer the d300s and d90 at the same time

the entry level will be hard too, compared to the price of the D3100 with a kit lens only at 700 US dollars.

A D300s killer

Regarding the features and the price tag it will cut D300s sales more than Pentax K5 sales

As has been pointed out several times already, the only official price we have seen for the K5 is MSRP. This is not the street price. Street price is guesstimated to be about $1400, making it, indeed about a $200 difference. A bargain if you ask me when you consider what our best lenses cost vs. what Nikon's best lenses cost. Plus in-body SR, much smaller whole-package size (incl. lens), better handling (IMO), etc.. We Pentaxians are not so deprived.

Just remember to be kind to our Olympus-using brethren. How upset would you be if the K5 turned out to be nothing more than a mildly repackaged K7? Man, did Olympus get rid of their entire R&D department last year or what? I'm thinking you gotta really love your Oly lenses to stay with them.

LOL that doesn't help me. I have nothing against a d400, I however expect Nikon to go straight d7000 to d700s/d800.
I'm very curious what could nikon add on top of d7000 to make a d400 (nô sarcasm here, genuine question).
Let met start with :
- a better multi selector
- better user interface
- better AF mode switch
- sturdier card storage door
- picture control in top lcd
- multi exposure with customer adjustable options in EV range and steps
- tie any release mode to timer
- useable iso 12800, optional h.3,.7 and 1 to iso 25600
- 18 mp but similar hi iso noise as the 16 mp sensor
- more cross sensors
- improved 3d tracking/face detection
- solid video with full time AF as with D7000
- in AF-C, the initial focus lock should be able to provide a sound
- improved AF adjust, similar to Oly, but not per sensor but per lens at 3 different focal lengths and/or distances.

There's more, of course

I have a pretty nice Pentax kit with two bodies and a lot of really nice lenses. But have been tempted on several occasions to jump ship and go to Nikon. Especially with the higher flash sync, high image quality, awesome flash system, etc etc. The D300s seemed to be the only way to go for a somewhat comparable price and the D90 always seemed like a step back to me from the K-7. But in looking at the initial reviews of this camera...could this be the one that makes me jump ship? I will obviously still wait to see what Pentax reveals with the K-5 but it seems hard to believe that they will release anything that will contend with this newly announced D7000 let alone the D300s or its replacement. Only thing that will still be a possibility as well of keeping me is that good quality glass will still cost me significantly less with Pentax.

There is nothing official on the K5. The announcement is the 20th. The latest rumor is a $1399 MSRP. So street price would be like $1199 body only.

This is true and I mis-typed. $1199 would make me a first-day buyer. But I'll eat my hat if it ever costs $1699 to buy a K5.
