ISO3200 JPEG from 16MP Sony Sensor (from Nikon D7000)

Chase Jarvis, the photographer who made a promotional video for the Nikon D7000, posted a ISO3200 JPEG on his blog. Since this is most likely the same sensor as will be in the K-5, this may give an indication for the K-5 High ISO performance (of course, high ISO output will not be the exact same, but the K-x proved Pentax can process high ISO just as well as Nikon can, if anything).

You can find it here.

The k-x having better high iso preformance than the d5000 (yeye dxo gives better score to the nikon, but in photography the k-x is better.) I think pentax k-5 will do the same against the d7000.
Why? Because pentax dont have to compete against any other camera in there lineup, while a too good d7000 would steel sales from the d700.

Looks good. No "pattern" noise and chroma noise can be handled in gimp/photoshop/etc.

Just a bit better than P&S's JPEG. But low noise. SS (sad s***) - like we say in Russian

^ Yes we do.

In fact we have again the same situation we had back in the days of K10D, where there was a Nikkon model (D200) using exactly the same Sony sensor. The situation gets repeated now, with the D7000 vs K5: the core of the beast will be the same. The mean differences will be around, in range of lenses, autofocus, jpeg production, pricing, etc. At the time I remember making comparisons of the same pictures from the same subjects, posted at Digital Photography Review, from K10D vs D200, and when processed by the same software, they looked exactly the same. I'm fairly convinced this will be the case with the new models.

Nikon claims they developed the sensor, but that's probably only partially true. But we don't actually know anything for sure. Though I don't think it's a coincidence Nikon, Sony and Pentax bring out 16MP models all at the same time. Dpreview also said the D7000 sensor was likely the same as the one in the Sony A55.

We do? I thought it was a rumor only and that we actually don't know anything.

For the record, the D200 did *not* have the same sensor as the K10D, but a faster version (4-channel readout instead of 2 or something of the sort). The D80, however, did have the same sensor as the K10D. And the Sony A100 as well.

One thing puzzles me a bit when I look at the specs of the D7000 and those of the A55 and the rumoured K-5: the former's ISO range is listed as 100-6400 with 12800 and 25600 "expanded", while the latter are both specified as 200-12800, with 100 and 25600 "expanded".

There's also the fact that the D7000's sensor is reported to do 14-bit output at full speed, something the "stock" Sony EXMOR sensor does not do.

So I think it's highly likely that Nikon is using a customized version of the Sony sensor for the D7000, but not the exact same one as the A55, and the K-5 will presumably use.

What that says about the ISO and DR performance of the K-5 remains to be seen. From what DPreview says about the A55, I think we have reasons to be optimistic.
