I said it two or three years back that this is RIGHT UP Pentax's alley so to speak.

I know the current pancakes cannot be used because of registaration distances or some such technical gobbledygook but surely a lot of work has already been done on creating high quality, light, small and well made glass.

It fits perfectly with pentax's niche of small/light/powerful/rugged yet they misse dthe boat.

I don't get it.

That's been done - early "bridge" cameras like my ancient Sony F717 have a 2/3" sensor.
I know it's been done, but I don't think there are any modern sensors in this format - are there?

The naming scheme is confusing, so that's an understandable assumption. But 1/1.6" is roughly 8×6mm, while 2/3" is 8.8×6.6mm.

Meanwhile, 4/3rds is about 4× the area of either one. An in-between sensor would be more like 13×9mm.
