Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM - Pentax Mount

I noticed the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM has been announced for $980.00 USD.

It's nice to see a new Pentax lens anytime IMO.

Yes, indeed. When one takes into account the Sigma lenses as well, lens availability for Pentax is really not bad.

From the specs, I'd rather have the Tamron though. It's got the same aperture and zoom range, weighs less, its zoom/focus rings rotate in the right direction and it's a lot cheaper. The only downside it that it doesn't have OS. But with SR, you don't really need that anyway.

The downside to the Tamron is that it doesn't have the USD compared to the Sigma HSM. I wish at the price of the Sigma though it would be dust sealed. The Tamron is a dust sucker but at least the front element is easy to remove to clean the inside. I have to send mine in for service eventually as the AF.C freezes occasionally and it also causes the camera LCD to shut off with slight movement. Supposedly a bad board or loose connection in the lens.

B&H have it listed and in stock at $US669... Pretty tempting at that price with the Aussie dollar so strong at the moment...

I picked up mine locally for A$743, and was pleasantly surprised to find that it included a 2-year warranty from CR Kennedy (the local Sigma distributor).

My brief thoughts on the lens can be found in this thread.
