I don't think the announcement will tell me what I need to know. What I need to see is what others say in actual usage. Someone like Falk to judge the real improvement in autofocus speed, real photos to show high iso dynamic range and noise -- those kinds of things won't come for awhile after the announcement. The only thing at the announcement will be the actual camera specifications. Sure, they will be nice, but they won't really tell the story about improvements in real useage over past cameras.

Pentax love to make us 'enjoy waiting', and so I'm doing just that.
Look forward to the new gizmo...

Pentax K-5 at Photokina

The Pentax press release embargo date is Monday Sep 20 4pm CEST (which is 10am EDT I think). However, the Photokina press tour is Sep 20 10am CEST for German journalists and the few German journalists w/o NDA could start reporting right afterwards. The Intn'l Photokina press tour starts after lunch though. The Photokina officially opens the day after, Sep 21.

Moreover, I can confirm that Pentax will bring a K-5 to Cologne. So, prototypes do exist but that's a known fact anyway.

K-5 launch

I'm glad to see Pentax is back in the ballgame. I have loved Pentax gear since high school (and I still shoot some of my K1000's for fun). I hope Pentax sees the need to bridge the gap between the K5 and the 645D for those of us who shoot professionally.

Personally, I'd like to see 2 things happen (obviously I'm probably in the minority)
1) To have 2 models offered, one with, one without HD video. OK, so it's handy to have, but honestly, when I'm shooting a wedding, there's not even a thought in my mind about switching from taking pics to video. I would much prefer that Pentax put out a full frame camera (w/o video) with a tack sharp lens. I think it would sell well to professional photographers.

2) My favorite lens of all time is the 50mm 1:1.2. I wish Pentax would come out with a auto focus version for their digital line-up.

12 Noon Japan on Monday will still be late Sunday night here in the USA. If you are on the West Coast, you may find out at as early as 8PM Sunday night!

I hope once everyone takes off the Spock ears and shoots real photography with the camera, it will perform well. We'll see soon enough.

Thank you Falconeye. That's exactly the kind of info I was hoping for!

Unlikely, as it would add cost. There's no reason for P-TTL not to work in stop down mode with any lens though. (Try it yourself, put some foil on the A contact and don't mount the lens all the way (so it's permanent stop down), set the on-camera aperture to wide open and P-TTL works fine with any lens (at any aperture). Or at least that was my experience when I tried it on my K10D.)

the K-5 needs to be MORE than just a K-7 with a better sensor. and "improved AF algorithms" won't cut it.

that may have been enough before the 7D and D7000, but its not enough anymore.

I am so excited!!! I skipped the K7 and knew that I would buy the camera after that, but now that we are so close I can hardly stand it. It is also the first time that I will be buying a camera at its release. I am all set to preorder at Amazon as soon as it is available.

It's a shame the PentaxForums Admin seems the only thing worth posting to the homepage anymore are rumors. The site's becoming more and more like RiceHigh's blog and K-rumors every day.

While I realize the need to discuss rumored new gear, there must be SOMEthing else worth mentioning on the homepage, right?
