Don't you think that, in addition to roll and pitch, a yaw level would be useful as well?

Not interested in having a compass in your camera?

I don't typically hang out in this forum but I was very interested in seeing what the K5 would bring to the table. I'm moved to digital 3 years ago and brought my old Pentax SLR glass with me. I've made the transitions along the way because the current model always seemed to be lacking. (especially in terms of AF and noise) K10D to K20D to K7.

I shoot stock photography and so although the race to more MP may just seem like marketing, the reality is that for those of us that contribute to iStockphoto, size matters. It makes a real dollars and cents difference, large images get better placement etc.

So for me, a huge motivator to move again would have been a sensor at least 4942x3273. With this one close at 4928x3264, it won't make the jump from XL images to XXL. That would have been a distinct advantage over the competition at this price level. Too bad. Without the other "enhancements" being vastly better than my K7, I guess I'll wait for the next version.

I am sorry if I sound like pessimistic, but the "surprises" we see here are only 14 bit RAW and 51200 ISO. 14bit RAW is irrelevant to most users, and there is performance penalty compare with 12 bit. 51200 ISO is just 25600 + 1EV in software.

In the German brochure, my disappointment are no mention of:
-AF in video
-Manual control in video
-F2.8 center sensor as employed by C/N/S many years ago
-Future 1/250s sync speed upgrade

Hopefully Pentax has also looked into the never-admitted shutter induced blur by K-7 and K-x as well

I am not german but french, but I think "Electronische 3D Nivelieranzeige" is just the the device to tell if the camera is level horizontallybecause of the beginning of the word: nivel.

As written before by others the translation is "Electronic 3D level display" BUT it is 2D actually, like the one in 645D: it shows roll and pitch levels.

I meantioned in an earlier post that I would not post comments on the K5 until some OFFICIAL specs come out.
It seems that we now have something more tangible to "rely" on.

My take on the K5, myself being a K7 ownder already:

1. Higher ISO handling: done! We will soon see what this really means when the K5 has been tested/tried and reviewed.
If this happens to be what I was looking for: being able to do bird/BIF photography in less-than-optimal lighting conditions, noiseless ISO 2000 (or more), I am giving the K5 a plus.

2. Improved AF: "maybe done" too; Again, because of the type of photography I do nearly 100% of the time, I need an AF which will be quick/responsive and able to do (track) better than previous models in AF-C. Another plus.
Someone on this thread mentioned something about a "predictive AF" ... I am not at all convinced that we will see this for a long while yet. I'd like to be surprised but again, not sure this will happen anytime soon.

3. Useage of the same grip as the K7: done! Definitely a big plus so that I won't have to buy yet another entirely different grip. By the way, I love the K7 grip and of course it gives this extra "safety" of more battery power/life. Plus!

4. More megapixels .... ? That wouldn't be a plus, rather an "OK" although this will allow for more cropping when necessary without loosing too much detail. However, I have always been a bit reluctant to agree that the more Mp's, the better.

5. Video ... not for me but, what can I say, it's built-in, just as with the K7. Nice for those who are into video stuff.

6. More FPS ... again, this would be a plus of I used the present FPS rate of the K7 at its maximum, something I seldom have to do.

7. Priced at $1399.00 USD, body only? Expect it to be about $1499 here in Canada. I can wait another six months.

8. "Only" one SD card slot ... I never even fill mine at 8Gb on any single outing. Worse come to shove: I'll use a 16Gb card. No big deal.

So, where do I stand here? Depending on Items No. 1 and 2 (AF GREATLY improved and great high ISO handling) I am reay to get the K5, but not until a bunch of GOOD reviews come out.

All in all this is a very important "upgrade" but is it exactly what I have been waiting for? ... Time will tell, hopefully very soon.

Why would anyone use AF in video anyway? Would it not be too jerky (and noisy with screw-drive lenses)? AFAIK the Canon 5D MarkII and 7D don't have AF in video either and has been used in numerous professional video shoots. It's really not a big deal to me.

D7000 has tracking ability, so you can program it to track an object and always have it stay in focus. That would be awesome for me, where I like to video R/C aircraft and boats, where they are constantly changing distance from me to them. Also people serious about video have an external mic. AF in video seems like a no brainer to me.

K5 seems good but, I expected a bit more innovation from Pentax. Let us compare the differences between K5 and K7.

The K5 seems to be a TOP APS-C DSLR. But the only innovation seems to be the SAFOX IX AF, which was introduced with the great 645D months ago. Sensor is not from Pentax, so what's REALLY new?

This DSLR has two main weaknesses for a true outdoor/globetrotter DSLR in my opinion:
-> no AA batteries usable (the KR can use AA batteries but is not WR. this must be a bad joke...)
-> no superzoom IF WR for the professional photoshooter available

If you travel you need ONE lens, not a set. DA* 16-50 and DA* 50-135 have a nice IQ, but a bad SDM (I heard). Rumors about the new 18-135 WR tell us, that it might have f3.5-5.6, no IF and (maybe!) average IQ.

People like comparing spec sheets. They think a camera from company X sucks because it doesn't meet *all* of the specs from a camera from company Y.

It honestly doesn't matter if they even use those features - they just read down the spec sheet and complain that it doesn't have this or that. I much prefer MF in video anyways - smoother and certainly more accurate in most situations.

He he ISO XXXXX :-)) ... i prefer using f:2 and ISO 400 (which is the ISO i shoot ~80-90% of the photos .. probabli used to trix and hp5 :-D ) then f:8 and ISO 6400 ... and yes .. I don't even turn my camera on, when the light is not enough to read that my watch is showing ;-)
Anyway... at least would be enough for me a more usable ISO of 1600-3200.
