"The maximum file size is 4GB for movie.
The maximum length is 25 minutes for movie."

Why would they not jut let you fill the card/deplete the battery?

My take of the K5 from my point of view, the two most interesting specs are:
1. 14-bit color (16384 levels vs. 4096). It would increase the dynamic range.
2. 16.2 sensor - should it have a weak anti-aliasing or no filter, it would be a deal maker for me.

I doubt it would increase the dynamic range, but rather just allow more shades between, removing rounding errors and increasing the kind of micro/local contrast you can get, which is great.

For those of you who are techinically minded about the SDXC issue.

Currently SDHC cards are based on FAT32 file system that limits it in many ways. Effectively caused by the limitations of MS Windows operating system. Mostly in card and file size. As laid out in SD Specification 2.0

SDXC cards currently come in SD Spec 3.0 and SD Spec 4.0 types. Spec 3.0 still retains the FAT file system and some of these cards can technically be in SDHC devices. Most of the initial SDXC cards are of Spec 3.0 and can be used like a SDHC card.

SD Spec 4.0 does away with the FAT file system but can not be used with SDHC devices. But allows for larger card and file sizes. The details of this specification are only just been made available across the electronic industry.

Now the Nikon D7000 can only shoot video in 20 minute bursts. This suggests it is still limited by FAT32 4gb file sizes. So it is obviously of SD Spec 3.0, so it is not a proper fully capable SDXC camera that would allow for bigger files sizes. Thus currently is it a technical branding issue.

Thus the Pentax K5 should be able to use certain SDXC cards that are SD Spec 3.0 but not newer SD Spec 4.0 cards. But a firmware upgrade could allow SD Spec 4.0 cards to be used, giving full SDXC capability.

The official K-5 page states the IsO is expandable upto ISO 12800 and certainly not ISO 51200. The normal iso range is 100-6400.

That certainly is not what was expected.

Albeit, the official site is a bit confusing but you need to read more carefully, the specifications state quite clearly:

Auto: ISO 100-12800 (1, 1/2, 1/3 steps), expandable to ISO 80-51200, Bulb mode up to ISO 1600, auto ISO range selectable Manual: 100-12800 (1, 1/2, 1/3 steps), expandable to ISO 80-51200, Bulb mode up to ISO 1600

Pentax should add brackets stating "auto mode" when showing:
* ISO 80-12800, 6-7 FPS

This cannot possibly be a Pentax sanctioned press release. With all due respect to Carolyn, not only does it seem like she rather not be there, but she also seems to be blurting terms she doesn't actually understand. And her use of 'ya' is grating! No offense intended!

But all that aside, FINALLY... this could be a replacement for the 'almost perfect' K20D. Let's hope this camera really, truly allows DFS to be turned off! A major fail on previous models!

Further confusion from Pentax.jp

Continuous shooting on the spec page in japanese is (1) up to 7.0fps for 30 JPEG, 8 RAW; (2) up to 1.6fps for unlimited JPEG, 10 RAW

On pentax.jp but on the english side (in the press release) it has the numbers we've seen before...

One thing I would consider definitive; the weight given, which is 660g body only 740g w/ card and battery.

Question is - can we kill auto-DFS?

This goes along with, "Exactly what is this new Night HDR mode?"

The K20D is useless for nighttime HDR due to forced auto-DFS, and the K-7 didn't improve on that flaw at all.

In my situation, kind of frustrating is a major understatement!

The inability to disable DFS means no K-5 for me!

Can we find out for sure b/c it sure seems like DFS is controllable when looks at the photos here:

But my question is .... is NR the same as DFS? Normally not... but on the K20D NR means DFS.

Remember, the Pentax live help is almost entirely useless. Do not trust when you learn from them.

This is a limitation of the file system (FAT32) and SD memory. But it is good to learn that the K-5 is going to support SDXC mode 4 via firmware update. BTW, it is specified as a firmware update because the mode 4 standard is not ratified yet; I expect this new mode will allow greater than 4GB files.
