Don't get me wrong, I owned a 50-200WR and is a great lens for the price, and thinking getting the 18-55WR (but now will get this instead). Still.... this lens design is ugly (2nd ugliest in pentax lens series, behind the F series).... IMO.
I like my F50/1.7 more than my FA50/1.4

As I guessed correctly awhile back, Pentax has finally made the lens that I'm sure a large majority of new and old users will go out and buy. There are plenty of positive things going for this lens:

If the optical performance isn't half bad, I predict this lens will be a hot favorite. Long overdue imo.

And it's WR. If its performance is close to the 18-55mm kit lens, I'll buy one. It will be good enough for "non critical" photography. And its build quality should be a few steps above the "old" Tamron 18-250mm. Around 400$ could be a fair price.
This is a lens they should have had with the K200D. Now we have a nice sealed kit-lens but only the more expensive K-5. I think the K-5 is a mighty fine "kit-camera"for the DA 18-135WR but I seriously think Pentax needs a lower priced. lower specced more entry level WR camera. To be honest, i think that such a camera would be more beneficial to Pentax/Hoya than a FF camera.

Price ? Usd 400??? Much more than that!!! Price of this lens on the K-5 (introduction level) is about usd 450,00. If we look at the DA 18-55 which sold separately was about three times as much we can expect usd 1.350,00 for this lens... Might as well get the K-5 then .
Smart marketing, sells more kits....

Almost like Nikon , to make a cheap sealed body but then you need to buy expensive sealed lenses

I agree on the WR=ugly thing. The overall look of the first 18-55's is much nicer. The big, cheap writing on these ones makes them look, well, cheap! Not that it really matters too much.
Not all WR's are ugly, the 100macroWR is a beautiful lens!
Well I suppose there had to be one cinderella

Let's hope this lens is better than the Tokina 16.5-135, on which it may well be based.

Let's hope the SDM in this lens is good and fast. (I'm guessing DC stands for the new SDM, because apparently it has SDM, but lacks the SDM acronym)

Let's hope it's not too expensive.

And if all those hopes come true, let's hope it is an indicator of things to come: Moderatly-priced lenses with WR, with SDM, and rounded diaphragm blades.

Also, the WR lenses look a lot better than the non-WR kits did. A lot! In fact, I think they're the best-looking cheap lenses built today.

or DC motor

Will Pentax remake old lenses with SDM to DC version? Silently?

I haven't looked at reviews, I have looked up images made with that lens and while I agree IQ could be better, I think it will be versatile enough because of range and WR to make it very attractive to me.

If this lens made for 16.3 MP APS-C sensor, I think it will be not worse than 16-45 and 50-135. I hope.

According to my sources, the design is very different and anyway if it was the same lens why remove 1.5mm at the wide end?

Price of the lens appears to be €450 if we take the difference between what the K-5 sells for with and without it. (Info from my blog here: Pentax K-5 Pre-Announcement.)

When DA16-45/4 was used as kit lens the kit-price did not differ much compared getting camera and lens separately. It is usually only the cheapest kit-lens you get cheap in a kit.

If you would get a Nikon D7000 with 16-85mm lens, you would save less than USD50 in most stores getting the kit-price.

I just did some research.... Price in Holland for DA18-55 sold separately is only 1.6 that of same lens on body...

But now we get to the weird one: B&H
DA18-55 II sold separately: usd 109.95
K-7 with DA18-55 : usd 988,79
K-7 body : 869,00 so DA18-55 price is 119,79

K-x with DA 18-55: usd 499,79
K-x body only: usd 509,99
