The surprise is that there is no surprise

I guess they were talking about 51200 iso. Pentax borke a record, did they? However, I care more about if the iso 3200 is is usable than useless 51200 on paper.

Yeah, I want to know how clean ISO 800 is.
Is it like 400 on K-7? Or maybe it's like 200 on K-7.
That would be something.

Personally I'd be stoked if the camera shot clean 3200-6400. Pentax shooting a clean hi-ISO is surprise enough for me.

Someone always promises some sort of shocking surprise for new camera announcements. The 60D was promised to have some miraculous surprise. The E-5 was promised to have some miraculous surprise. The K-5 was promised to have some miraculous surprise.

None of them had earth-shattering surprises.

However, all of them are decent products, at the very least, and one of them is actually so darn good I'm going to have to own one someday.

The D700 can "almost" be persuaded to shoot ISO6400 as clean as ISO100.
Personally... if the K-5 can do this, I would be amazed.

But I'd be more than happy with an ISO3200 that is as good as ISO100 tbh.

maybe the surprise will be what photographers can get out of the k5 + the new-not-shockingly-priced zoom lens. between supposedly better af, higher iso capability and a new motor on the lens, maybe those moms and pops looking for the right camera to shoot kids' hockey, football, ballet, track, etc., will be very interested in a pentax?

I was surprised with the high body-only price.

I will be surprised when:

... reviews and tests do come out, what I would like to see is a clean, noiseless image taken at day's end, at ISO 2500-3200. I mean: at ISO 3200 I could probably be able to shoot some ducks (sorry the pun) in very dimmed lighting conditions and keep a decent shutter speed.

... the AF shows more reliability ... here's this hawk coming toward you; I want to be able to have a good keeper rate, unlike what I have been experiencing over the past few years with the other Pentax cameras I own.
Will the AF-C performs as expected?

If that's the case, I hope it's more like that new Fuji with a nice large separate optical viewfinder.

I reckon new type of AF motor (DC), ISO 51200 and supposedly much improved AF system should constitute sufficient surprise value ...
