K-5 uses Aptina sensor rather than Sony??

A news about Aptina CMOS sensor came out from DPR says Aptina released a 16MP and a 14MP APS-C CMOS sensor, planned production time is first quarter 2011.

Aptina announces CMOS sensors for DSLRs and compacts: Digital Photography Review

Whom will they mass produce for?? Maybe I am stupid but maybe Pentax?
Use a different sensor could be a good reason for selling higher than D70000.

And the Aptina sensor can output 1080/30P. Why would Pentax limit their sensor to only 1080/25P (PAL) when they could give an NTSC option as well for US customers?

I have no idea who the Aptina's "customers" are...

It's an interesting sensor.

But it can't be in the K-5 for three reasons:
  1. Production starts 2011, K-5 starts shipping in October 2010.
  2. The chip photo doesn't match that shown for the K-5
  3. No mention of integrated A/D-converters. Pentax explicitely mentions to rely on that technology.

Sony uses a unique "Column-Parallel A/D Conversion Technique" for its EXMORs that has an independent A/D converter for each column on the sensor. That must be the "integrated" reference they make.

Not used by Pentax, at least not yet.
In the future, who knows?
If those sensors are good enough then Pentax may use them. They don't have to use Sony, they use the best sensor they can find.

Actually, Pentax said no external what I translated into internal. But that wasn't my point. My point was that I found no reference to embedded converters in the Aptina release.

The D7000 arrives in October as well, so even though Nikon has been hush-hush about sensor sources lately and supposedly seeking to have their own designs manufactured by another company (like they did in the D3) we won't be seeing the Aptina in that one either.

I've never even heard of Aptina. I hope we get to see how this performs in some camera, someday.

Pentax will definitely evaluate the sensor, they say it's aimed to mirrorless cameras.

Hard to tell for two reasons:

#1. Not in production, never mind tested in-camera.

#2. Not clear what "better" means.

I'm curious about the company's current customers and the models the current sensors are found in. But not curious enough to spend more than the five minutes I did with Google finding nothing but press releases.

I think it would work great in a Pentax mirrorless APS-C camera like the Sony NEX.
