My own Photokina observations (Pentax and others)

This is a repost of what I sent to PDML, I felt it was stupid to delete parts not talking about Pentax but I can edit it if some mods ask me to, no problem.

1/ pentax gave away some cool bags
2/ there were some pretty nice girls there
3/ the Fuji x100 is Very Very nice specially it's hybrid viewfinder,
Imo it will sell well (considering it's niche).
4/ K5 AF is indeed more nervous, how much better af-c is hard to tell though
5/ 18-135 is nice, large but short. Felt way better constructed than
other DA WR zooms.
6/ once setup correctly, the k5 did NOT do DFS after about 3 minutes Bulb pose.
7/ 12800 iso quite useable with a pinch of Lr3 NR. 51200 is salvage
only obviously.
8/ no memory cards were allowed in camera
9/ nothing new on video controls
10/ mirror lock up just as in K7
11/ buffer (bummer) very short indeed due to 14bit raw but they may
change that or add a 12bit mode.
12/ the 645d is.... Heck I WANT one and very nervous AF IMO.
13/ Pentax still have the biggest bags
14/ as requested by many, intervalometer can go as high as 999 pictures.
15/ raw button can be set to a couple other functions including braketing.
16/ firmware was 0.30 so a couple things might still change, Kr
firmware was 1.00
17/ leica gave away some little (too litle) pins. If I cut the end of
it and glue it on my lx3 I may pretend to have a Leica
18/ leica m9 is **heavy** ouch !! And it's screen is ridiculously
small. They had the space, ths is very stupid.
19/ lx5 (and leica version) has no more the little annoying joystick
but a wheel a la dslr.
20/ did I mention the pretty girls?
21/ Tried for first time 3d tv at panasonic booth. This is the most
BSing. Thing I ever saw : flickering in the glasses, flickering in
your brain.

Thanks to Ishpuini for making this all possible

Nice thanks for that!

What can you say about the viewfinder on the K-5 is it any different to the K-7?

When you say nothing new on video controls what do you mean?

Cheers

2. Always a good reason to attend any event

4. What do you mean, AF is Nervous? Can it actually track in AF-C or is it just faster (than the K7)?

6. Sounds great!

14&15. Again. Sounds great. Now maybe I can actually use the RAW button for something.

Thanks for the list.

Nervous? How do you mean exactly? Also, if you cant tell how much better it is over the K-7, that makes me "nervous".

I think he meant AF in K-5 has quicker response. In my observations at Photokina I found AF to be clearly faster in K-5 than AF in K-7.

AF in K-7 usually focuses, stops, thinks a while and does little adjust before locking AF. K-5 did focus once and locked it. K-r was quick too.

nervous as opposed to calm.
perhaps pertaining to faster to move vs slower and more laid-back

That's it. Obviously this is highly subjective but I'm used to K7 so I have a good idea of its usual AF performance. 645D behaves exactly he same, if not faster (because screw-driven lenses).

For what I saw, viewfinder is identical or nearly so, noted nothing surprising.
Nothing different on video, just as K7, you chose if aperture varies or not, if it does not, exposure will vary only shutter speed and ISO.

What do you mean by nervous AF? Does it need a Prozac or something?

Responded in the meantime but no problem, I will try to describe it differently: it seemed to me to K5 was more prompt to focus with less back and forth trying to make its mind if the thing is in focus or not.

Same for the very little AF-C I could do (moving my finger... huh in front of the lens), it seems more responsive, more directly to the point in focus.

Yes it's always surprising on the K-7, the camera focus really fast then make these 2-3 micro adjustments at the end that slow down everything. Your report is good news then!

If that is what some call "not faster" (and technically it is) I will be happy
