Forests are very difficult subjects, especially in terms of dynamic range. They are very dark but the little sunlight that enters and reaches the lower levels makes for extreme differences. I remember that I never produced an acceptable forest photograph when I was still shooting analog (I didn't master photography back then as I do now), it took digital to provide the immediate feedback to learn to deal with this more or less...
I can see indeed that detail is very rich in both shadows and higlights in these images, seemingly richer than what I would expect from earlier cameras indeed.
However, we don't know how these images were made. What image mode was used? Or were they shot in RAW? And if so, how were they processed? I suppose we can exclude the use of the in-camera HDR modes, but all the rest is guesswork. But still impressive...
