(I'm posting this here because Sony makes sensors for Pentax...)

Well there where rumors befor about Fujitsu being the manufactuar of the sensors in the D3 and D700.

And isn't our PRIME II processor produced by Fujitsu?

I'm not so concerned about who owns the factory than I am about who owns the product.

In any case, Sony makes/uses a variety of sensor types. It could make sense to outsource manufacture of non-strategic commodity-type chips, perhaps as used in some P&S.

One more example of the variety inside the relationships between putative competitors.

For those who would ask, this is not an intra-keiretsu deal. Sony is outside that system.

I think bigger news would have been "Sony outsources some sensor production to US firms"

No, that's what we call a "man bites dog" story.

As others have noted, we need a "tongue in cheek" smiley.

The blog post cited camera phone sensors. I don't really see this as a BFD in the DSLR end of things.

This gets weird with Fuji now being part of the 4/3 mix. I wonder whether they will be making sensors there too?

I wonder if the sensor improvements are partly Fuji's doing. I remember their sensors having good DR back in the day.

Do realize that Fujifilm (the camera company among other things) is a totally distinct company from Fujitsu, which is a world class technology firm, similar to HP and IBM. I have a few friends who are consultants with Fujitsu and the place sounds very competent. I'd have zero issues with Sony offing manufacturing to Fujitsu--I would think they could also handle design if asked.

According to the Chinese press, SONY wanted to keep the trade secrets and intellectual property within Japan, and Fujitsu was the only domestic company that didn't compete in the same markets against Sony.

Not really relevant to Pentaxland, except as way to gain insight into technological alliances and execution strategies.
