Any idea if we will also get a rebate like Europe and US?

I really really want this camera, but hoping to pay below $1500.
I didnt see anything about rebates and have never been aware of any on offer in Aus before. No eta either.

I guess there's always a chance but having said that we've missed out on all the past rebates that have been available to the rest of the world.

I'm hoping that CRK can negotiate a better per unit price that incorporates the rebate, (that the rest of the world will be getting), and pass that on to the retailers.

bazz.

Rebates on new gear like the k-5 in Australia is not going to happen anytime soon. The only rebates I've seen here is on superceded or 1+ y.o. camera models.

In Oz, it's mainly Nikon that seems to have been in love with the rebate concept. Over the last year, I've observed at least two rounds of rebates on their SLR's .

I personally hate rebates as an annoying gimmick. Rather than offer rebates, just bump the retail price down, goddammit.

Couldnt agree more, obviously there is some advantage to offering a rebate from the manufacturer's perspective, but dropping the price seems far more sensible to me.

Still i think given the AUD at the moment, we should have a pretty good price anyway. What i dont quite get, is why we are so far behind other countries in getting the new gear when we are geographically so close!

I guess they supply the most demanding market's first.

It's interesting to speculate on this. Maybe it is just a logistical issue - CRK have a big distribution and sales network here to feed, so maybe they just need make sure they have adequate stock for everything to flow smoothly. Maybe they are also just holding back a bit on the K-r and K-5 release in order to reduce their inventory of K-x and K-7's.

If CRK is willing to do an excess inventory sale to clear out their K-7 and K-x stock, I will be tempted.

Currently the cheapest for K-x body is A$605 from digidirect - if they lower it to below A$500 I may just pick up a unit and use it for casual shooting.

Rebates enable the manufacturer to drop the buyer cost for a month while keeping the selling price stable in their books. It's OK for the buyer's cost to fluctuate (and for the stores to do whatever they can), but the manufacturer still likes to use the full price internally in a fairly consistent manner.

I don't have anything to add to this discussion, except that i'm waiting for a K-5 in Australia too!

Interested in body-only group buy too.

Current cheapest k-x (body) I've found is actually at Ted's Cameras for $599.

I ordered a k-r kit with Sigma flash from DCW yesterday and received an email from them today saying that 'current eta is mid November'. :-(

That makes the flash around $40-50 compared with the lowest price around (I'm not counting Vanbar at the moment while they leave the gate open). Does anyone have good/bad experience with this flash? It probably would be useful (though I'm planning on doing lots of no-flash low light photography with the K-r )
By my calculations the $889 DCW deal gives me the Sigma flash for $65 (worth $219) when compared with the cheapest price I've seen, which is Dirt Cheap at $824 (excluding the Vanbar price of course).
From what I've read the Sigma EF-530 DG ST is an excellent flash for the price - powerful, tilt & swivel, very wide angle - you'd be spending well over twice that price to get those features in a Pentax or Metz.
Couple of short reviews here https://www.pentaxforums.com/accessoryreviews/Sigma-EF-530-DG-ST.html

530 ST can't do wireless... so that's the deal breaker for me.

Has anyone heard a confirmed arrival date for the K-5 in Australia? Last i heard was early november.

It seems like Aus is the only place not to have them yet!

I don't think the first batch will be far away, It's also interesting we seem to be the only place offering the 18-135mm kit, and not the 18-55mm kit as the USA and elsewhere seem to be.

JB HiFi in Sydney wanted to offer their last K-x to me for $580. But the forum marketplace came through for me once again.

Well I am very excited right now, because... a courier just came and delivered my new white k-r! Maybe I'm the first one in Australia to get one?! That was certainly quicker than DCW was expecting!
