Congratulations Anthony.
Have fun with it, and kep everyone informed on your results.

A lot of the thread has been on the high Aussie dollar. What you must realise lads, is that the AU$ is high against US$, but only becuase the greenback is slipping! Since prices will be based on the exchange rate between the Yen and AU$, a comparison with the greenback is pointless.

OT, but interesting, just saw a BigW catalogue with a K-x! I haven't seen Pentax represented in the discount chains before, (that I can remember).

I'd heard about the K-x being picked up by BigW a few months ago, but had never seen one in my local BigW or in a catalogue. It's good news for Pentax to get their DSLR's into such a retailer. Perhaps in time the K-r will follow the K-x.

The K-x has been in OfficeWorks since October last year, if OW counts as a discount chain. I know a lot of K-x buyers have bought from OW, and taken advantage of their price match minus 5% discount policy. It would be great if OW decided to stock the K-5 - the best K-5 price at Vanbar's or someone minus 5% would be hard to resist

Quite keen to get one of the new 35mm F2.4s for my K-x, hopefully it's not too long for Oz to get some and the prices aren't too outrageous!

BTW - BigW's price is $724 - a fair bit over the $580 JB wanted from Ash.

Yeah, but JB are known to do deals in store, particularly for display stock they're tring to get rid of. Big W wouldn't be bothered other than running fixed catalogue sales - not common with big ticket items like that...

Just had word from DCW that the black K-r isn't due to arrive until November 16

With both DCW and Ryda.com having to throw in trinket sweeteners across their bundles range to try and make the intro pricing look less vomit inducing, I can't see customers here breaking down any doors to get at either K-r or K-5.

It will need places like Officeworks, HN, DS, to fire the local market, but they won't touch new models at all until they can bargain decent discounts themselves from CRK.
They never bother with a handful of early adopter nerds, they go for the big fish.
Maybe last 2 weeks in Dec. might see light on their shelves/catalogs, if very lucky.

DCW Ryda.com...trinket sweeteners
A flash like the Sigma 530 is a pretty good trinket. And ryda do trinkets all the time, for all DSLR's.

Speaking of Ryda, the base Nikon D3100 price with kit lens is identical to the K-r kit price, so I think the 'vomit inducing' pricing of the K-r isn't too out of line. And the D7000 at $1950 w.18-105 vs K-5 $2288 w. 18-135 isn't much of a gap. Body only K-5 and D7000 will probably end up the same price.

By all indications there is a lot of consumer interest in the K-5, from my discussions with local retailers. Early adopter demand seems quite strong, and those buyers are usually willing to pay a premium. I'm not picking up as much retail buzz about the K-r though.

the new d3100 isn't even as close to as good as the old K-x.

On Nov 1st I walked into Camera Action in Melbourne and the salesman unpacked a k-r for me (he said I was the 1st person in Melbourne to play with one ) , they only had white kits and black ones were coming in soon. I put my name down for one (body only) for $799. Though that flash deal looks pretty good.

Well, as it turns out, they were wrong. My black K-r came into store yesterday. I picked it up late in the day and, with the last light, fired off a few shots. This is going to be a lot of fun!
