from the looks of it, the k5 will be MSRP'd at $1599.
no sign of that dropping anytime soon at least here in the US.
that's waayy too much for me.

maybe hoya is trying to gauge what the reception will be at that price and if it's good, stick with it. why not?

well, sorry, my $$ will go elsewhere.
If it makes you happier why wait? go get yourself the D7K.... it is your money.

K-r and DA 35mm f/2.4 showed up at my store today. Now my family is pleading for the K-r battery to finish charging so they don't have to hear me complain about using it with the old K20D

IMO, the K-r will be a tough seller for Pentax until the price comes down. The 14MP 1080p HD Nikon D3100 was just released at $699. More megapixels and better HD for $200 less. Yikes.

Have we had any indication as to whether or not Amazon will be lowering their prices on either the K-r of K-5? If no, they are severly disappointing. Especially the K-r. The K-5 price is somewhat justified, but I cannot see the K-r being purchased for $800. It's just too high, especially with the Kx going for ~$500, a much better price. And you can get a K-7 for only $100 more, which is a lot more camera for not much more money.. And it's silly that it only cost $30 more for a super nice kit lens for $830, seems like body only wouldn't sell much. Hopefully these prices go down.
Agree, I posted similar view sometime back, k-r price is not justified. And especially for k-x users, there is no motivation. My next upgrade would be k-5 (or upcoming Canon if I decide to go multi-system).

However, K-7 is a different story, I passed it one just for $500

I'll have what he's having.
Looks like after initial preorders are filled it will have to drop like a lead balloon to sustain any traction against that.
Then Canon are yet to cough up their 1000D successor too.

And I sense that Nikon are gearing to rain on the parade of the K5 intro too.
I know a few who have D7000s on preorder, or waiting with cash in hand, far more than K-5 early risers.

Pentax is a niche player, not a mass high-volume seller like Canon/Nikon, and their pricing makes sense in that context.

A bit high at the beginning , catch whatever they can from the small number of people willing to buy at the price, bring it down gradually.

Modest production rate, so they never have to do fire sales to get rid of high inventory.
The price WILL drop, but don't expect the price to get drastically low.

On the plus side (from Hoya's point of view) - they are a small, lean company, and can probably turn a profit on moderate volumes where Canon/Nikon would have to sell many more units to break even.

This is very true. Maybe someday Canon/Nikon will be playing catch up with Pentax, but for right now Pentax is a company gunning for five percent of the market and will make a profit if they can hit anywhere close to that.

The kr sure looks like a good performer to me, better in many ways than the Nikon. Less crippled, better high iso. I see the D3100 as being a particularly uninteresting camera (while the D7000 is really nice for the price).
