I got my copy of Outdoor Photograher yesterday and saw a nice full page ad for the K5. Did Pentax listen and decide to market better???

Interesting that the advert states that it only goes to ISO 12,800. Even though the lowest ISO is still 80 ISO. Did they cripple the firmware already?

I think the last time I saw a Pentax ad was in a NatGeo magazine when I was kid.

Yes, my first vague memories of the "Pentax" brand were Asahi Pentax ads in Life Magazine (anyone remembers those ?) and National Geographic which my father subscribed to when I was a kid.

On the webpage followthrough it has 80-51200 ISO. Not sure what's going on here

I wonder if they created an /obsessed website section just to measure ad response rates. If so, that's good marketing technique. Also interesting that you can chat to a Pentax rep there for further details, again that's good sales technique.

Does Pentax really have a marketing machine these days? It often seems more like a wind-up toy to me.

Its officially confirmed ISO 80-51200, however, anything below ISO 100 and above ISO 12,800 is really software-driven "amplification".

Hardcopy magazines, especially monthlies, tend to have fairly long advertisement proof submission cut-off deadlines, so the ad may well have been accurate at point of submission.

ISO 51,200, especially, looks like a final touch Pentax put in just for marketing bragging rights.... I wouldn't know what to do with it, other than test shots just to try it out.

We should get a thread going where everyone can scan the Pentax magazine ads, new or old and post them up. Or would that be a copyright violation of some sort?

Not if its for journalistic purposes. In any case, can you imagine how Pentax could step on their PR crank any more than they usually do by making us take down their own ads posted for more eyes to see?

Copyright law is a morass from which few emerge unsullied.

In other words, you'll get as many opinions as you have lawyers hired.

But in this case, as noted above, Pentax would hardly want to discourage ad views.

No harm, no foul.

Yes it's good for Pentax to advertise in appropriate national publications like OP. And it's far more engaging to "be obsessive" rather than to "be interesting."

But the low budget provided Pentax's marketing team is evident--don't you think the props came from the art director's kitchen drawer.*

This advertisement is awfully static and does nothing to demonstrate the benefits of the Pentax system. It would have been nicer to illustrate the faster AF and weather resistance by showing parents shooting their adorable kids at a soccer game in the rain--while freaked-out owners of other branded cameras ditch their gear and look over the shoulder of the smiling Pentax-shooting dad.*

I've had this thought of creating a grassroots marketing campaign of sorts. A number of us work in video professionally, and it could be a fun project. shoot your own crazy pentax ad and post it. we're creative people after all. why not funnel that into raising awareness of the brand?
