Any word on the 18-135mm?

I'm getting pretty caught up in the K-5 excitement. The only thing keeping my credit card safe is my interest in the 18-135. Haven't heard much about it lately with everyone focused on the products that just started shipping. The press release indicated it would ship in October as well- has anyone heard anything about when it will be out?

Also, any news on whether it will be offered as a kit with the K-5 in the US? If not, I guess there is no reason to hold off on purchasing the body...

I sure wouldn't base a $1500+ decision on what is said here we just aren't that good! A good 18-135 could shake up my system, that's for sure; I currently have no WR / DA* lenses to see me through a good storm. I'm watching for official word right along with ya.

I am waiting too, as the K-5 purchase "WITH" the 18-135mm WR is a good savings on the lens if that is in your plans.

I heard that it's a lot more expensive than it should be.

WR, DC, versatile range, compact, build, no zoom creep; I've been asking for a lens like this for a long time, now I'm not so sure. I've stopped using the DA 18-250mm because IQ was disappointing compared to my 16-45 and 55-300. The 18-135 is going to have to be a pretty special superzoom for me to bite.

I have found the 18-55 wr to be well built and optically OK, although I don't like the way it renders. I have high hopes for the 18-135mm.
I have contacted Pentax Canada to try and get an idea of local availability date.

That's why I'd like to see it in a kit. I'd expect good savings that way.

I think the 18-135 is supposed to be a Pentax design unlike the 18-250. I certainly have some concerns about the IQ as well given the range. Hopefully it will be out soon and we can start looking at some pictures.

Amazon has the 18-135 listed here: Amazon.com: Pentax 21977 DA 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Lens for Pentax Digital SLR cameras: Camera & Photo

Says "1 to 2 months" instead of preorder. Wonder if that's just some tricky wording so that they don't have to honor the preorder guarantee...

Hmm. Not much to save on the 18-135 kit there!

Japanese (Yodobashi) prices in Euro right now: 1233 for body only, 1366 for the 18-55 kit, 1675 for the 18-135 kit and 527 for the 18-135 - the 18-135 kit is a good deal there!

The Amazon price of the K-5 and 18-135mm is $2,128.95 compared $1,266.00 for the new Canon 60D with 18-135mm IS lens. The K-5 has a big advantage for stills but the 60D has a big advantage for HD video.

This is getting off-topic, but international prices are crazy then:
In Australia from digidirect:

60D with 18-135 IS: AUD2,023.00
D7000 w. 18-105 AUD2,049.00
K-5 with 18-135 WR: AUD2,299.00

On local prices, the K-5 is OK value for money compared to the equivalent 60D kit.

My prediction for this lens?

1. Plenty of pincushion distortion between 35mm and 135mm.
2. Average resolution throughout the range, but especially bad at 70mm and up.
3. Moderate to high CAs.
4. Average fall-off.
5. Slow autofocus.

I might have agreed a bit more 2 weeks ago, but I'm more optimistic now. There was a lot of pessimism about the K-5 and the new 35mm when everyone was reacting to specs and MSRPs, but the products seem to be delivering. I'm hoping for the same from the zoom, but only time will tell.
