DxO rates Pentax K-5!

And... WOW, just WOW!

Gordon was right about the DR.

Overall Score 82
Portrait (Color depth) 23.7 bits
Landscape (Dynamic range) 14.1 Evs
Sports (Low-Light ISO) 1162 ISO

82... that's crazy - same as 645D and D3S - and AHEAD of D700!

The rumors of the APS-C camera with FF-IQ were true after all, weren't they?

Ah, didn't see that one, thanks for the pointer.
(IMHO if anything belongs to the NEWS section, it's this one)

I think this deserves more attention than it is getting! Most impressive, and from the shots I have seen from an actual user friend that has had the K5 for two weeks, it is not hard to see that this is an outstanding camera in the hands of a qualified shooter, not just on paper.
Best Regards!

All DXO does is measure raw sensor performance. It doesn't show real world resolution. All DXO is doing is giving bragging right to the K5 for pure sensor power. Remember the Samsung GX20 bested the K20d as did the Fuji Finepix S5 pro over the Nikon 200d on the same DXO sensor tests. I hate to say it but it's not going to best Canon's 7d in sharpness.

Awesome.
For me it scores even higher - about 84 because Pentax has better high iso noise handling and quality, which has not been taken into account.

I hate to say it but it's not going to best Canon's 7d in sharpness. Read more at: h

Its really up to any individual if they appreciate more than with your other brand choosing. You like your brand model so much .

Sharpness is not a feature of a sensor. If you mean resolution, then it is true that the 7D has two megapixels on the K5 that will give it more resolution. However dynamic range is a much bigger deal. What you see here is that the K5 beats the 7D by nearly 3 stops in dynamic range at base iso. This is huge. In fact, the K5 has as much dynamic range at iso 800 as the 7D has at it's iso 100. How many shooters will give up a large amount of dynamic range for a couple of megapixels?

The D7000 will be next up, and probably very similar results.

What DxOMark tells you is that Canon have got a lot of catching up to do.

I have to admit to bias towards DxO tests; I use DxO Optics as my RAW processor and I have always found that the French are much more pragmatic and empirical in their assessments of the relative strengths and weaknesses of various models.

And to think I was on the verge of buying a 7D
