French AF test: K5 on par with D7000, 60D

Forgive me if this is already posted, but on depreview, there is a French test that compares how many times and at which distances these cameras can focus on a car traveling at 50 km/hr coming straight at the camera.

http://forums.*************/forums/read.asp?forum=1036&message=36898004

(i tried to post the link but it looks like Pentax Forums is blocking Dpreview links - is that correct?)

Minor differences with the K5 vs D7000 vs 60D, with the k5 holding the prize for closest focus at 10 meters, and also of note, the K5 with 14 in focus and 1 OK, is more than twice the number of K7 with 7 in focus.

A lot of posts on this forum have suggested that Nikon would still be better for predictive tracking. Well i've got to say that this test doesn't identify a Nikon advantage. Obviously, there are other kinds of situations that could be checked to determine a Nikon or Canon advantage. Nevertheless, the doubling of the K5 AF performance over the K7 obviously demonstrates how far Pentax has come in the latest model year.

Congratulations Pentax, more AF than i hoped for with the K5, shocking even

It's great to see that the K-5 is holding its ground. I did some low-light AF tests yesterday, and the accuracy of the AF system was perfect as long as what you were pointing it at had some contrast.

For the K-5 professional review, we'll be doing a continuous AF test video, and we hope those results prove to be equally good!

Yup, dpr links are being blocked to send a message to DPR. Hopefully, they act upon that- see the homepage post that we recently put up for details.

Adam, i'm OK with blocking dpr, they piss me off anyway

Since i can't link easily, i'll post a summary provided by DuncanM1 on that site:

QuoteQuote:
So if I understand it correctly, the image of the boy measures how far the boy moved after the shutter is tripped, so a lower number is better? For the car, each green triangle indicates one in-focus shot?

If I understand it correctly on the car:
the K-7 got 7 in focus shots and 2 OOF. First IF at 49metres and last at 25m

the K-5 got 14 IF, one OK focus and 1 OOF. 1st IF at 48m and last at 10m, 1 OK at 7m.

the D7000 got 15 IF, and 2 OK focus. 1st IF at 46m and last at 11m. last OK at 8m.

The D60 got 14 IF, 1 OK focus and one OOF. 1st IF at 47m, last at 12.5m. 1 OK at 10m.

Since the car is moving at 13.88 m/s, the total time from 50 to 0m = 3.6sec so total time from 48 to 7m (for the K-5) = 2.95sec/15 frames= 5.1 frame/sec

Basically, this seems to indicate a dead heat between the K-5, D7000 and D60.

The scores of the different SLR is in this PDF In French of course.

I do not trust that much FNAC. They do a lot of marketing driven measurbation, but they are not reliable for giving a clueless amateur a real photographer perspective.

To put it crudely, they are a best-buy sorta trying to use "science" to sell the products they want.

Duplicate thread indeed

You're forgiven though

This is where it has been posted:

-> https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-k-5-forum/122336-labo-fnac-tests-k...o-focus-c.html

The above thread works with the original material (not the material copied to dpreview) and grants access to much more info than the DPR discussion.

Note: I knew somebody would be lost in the mass of new subforums and create another thread for the same topic though

We are going to see more and more dup threads now that there are dedicated sections for the K-5, and K-r.

Sorry to you Falk for getting this thread off topic.
