Originally posted by ghelary I feel very sorry for Olympus fans, as this company have a great history. But I wouldn't invest in 4/3 at this time, and I would certainly advice people not to. 4/3 cameras have lost any adge against APSC on size, price, or Mpx.
Theoretically, their mount was large enough for APSC. And many of their lenses might have worked on APSC well enough. And they could have made new lenses.
I wonder what would have happened if Olympus started to release APSC cameras too. Of course, now it's too late.
The same reasoning applies to Pentax too, of course. To me, K-5 is Pentax' E-3.
I fear that the battle for electronic only / no mechanics / outsourced optics system cameras (aka mirrorless or EVIL) is already won by the giants, i.e., Panasonic, Sony, Samsung. We will see these cameras for $199 soon enough.
IMHO, the remaining traditional makers (Nikon, Pentax, Canon, Leica) will have to rely on more sophisticated cameras which currently includes mechanics. Sony got the choice and it seems they cannot decide, even try something in between (SLT).
After you buy the CPU, the sensor with global electronic shutter and the EVF OLED, there isn't enough added value left for camera makers. It's just the housing (cabinet) with little relevance to value. Esp. if others can buy in the lenses as well. That's one reason for lens-based IS in this segment: you can buy it in with the lens, no own investment required. And at $199, that's crucial.
