Pentax 18-250 is here

Seen on DPR and PDML:
Pentax Imaging: smc DA 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 ED AL(IF) - DA - Zoom - Digital & 35mm - Lenses - Cameras by Pentax

Less than 500 US$ it seems. Well done Pentax

Not for sale in Japan yet.

Is there any truth to the rumor that it is a rebadged Tamron?

Since there is a tamron lens of those exact specs, it seems unlikely that it's not.

Both

Tamron because of the very well designed lens (considering the type of lens) and Pentax for sourcing from Tamron (Tamron which owned by Sony btw)

Mixed feelings about this.

Good news because it will probably sell well to consumers buying entry-level dSLRs, will probably start to come in kits and so will help to shift more Pentaxes which will hopefully contribute to keeping Pentax alive.

Not so good because first we have Pentax/Tokina collaborations in which it's not at all clear that Pentax is actually designing any optics, and now an obvious sourcing of a Tamron lens. Now I am happy enough using a Tamron or a Tokina when they are good, but I want a Tamron to be a Tamron and a Pentax to be a Pentax. Using not one but two third-parties for system lenses frankly doesn't give me much confidence in the future.

But hey, like I said, if it means more Pentax sales I guess it's a good thing.

1/ most other (except maybe Canon as usual) do source some lenses from 3rd party manufacturer. Specially Sony, not even sure they still design lenses lol
Yes Nikon did/does too

2/ You seem not wanting to accept what people say about the deal (yes, well informed people) the whole majority of lenses which were designated in collaboration with Tokina come from an Optical Blue Print from Pentax. The 12-24 is from Tokina and if I rememeber well the DFA100 macro as well. ALL the others are Pentax designs AFAIK.
But then you won't beleive it I suppose since you decided to think they were all Tokina.

Hi there

I own a Tamron 18-250mm Di II lens myself and judging by the photo on the link that 'thibs' posted, it looks at first glance to be EXACTLY the same lens.
Apart from the obvious re-badging, it has an identical 'lock' to prevent 'lens-creep' and a very similar type of lens-hood etc.
Of course I may well be proved wrong, but assuming that the information provided turns out to be accurate, I rather doubt it !
Incidentally, I've found the 18-250mm zoom to be a genuinely excellent all-purpose lens and definitely nothing to be ashamed of in any respect.

Best regards
Richard

Well, here is my opinion (for what it's worth):

Pentax has done it before with 28-105 lens, adding their own SMC - and the colors were rich and beautiful.

I've always been pleased for the most part with Tamron lens construction (aside from noisy AF), and their 18-250mm appears to be a nice improvement from prior (somewhat hit/miss) 18-200mm model. I love my 28-75mm SP XR DI F2.8 and still very happy with results when I use 28-200mm XR IF

Personally, I found myself taking less photos when switching between lenses all the time, and having this "walkaround" lens would probably suit 80% of my everyday needs just fine. I kinda miss having to just grab one camera with one lens mounted on and going/driving worry free.

So would I buy it - absolutely, specially if Pentax indeed added their own SMC coating.

Regards,
D

an interesting low end lens but so much for the Pentax roadmap.
