Firmware update for K-x and K-7

There is new firmware update for K-x (V1.02) and K-7 (V1.11).
The main change - support for SDXC cards.

Download for K-x:
http://www.pentax.jp/english/support/digital/k-x_s.html

Download for K-7:
http://www.pentax.jp/english/support/digital/k-7_s.html

It is unclear are there any important 'hidden' changes.

Apologies if this was announced before.

Cheers,
Erika

Do you know what other changes there are?

I'm not sure about the other changes. I wonder myself did Pentax changed anything else (i.e. improved exposure calculations, or P-TTL work)

Yesterday I installed this firmware update on my K-x. I noticed that the installation was a bit longer than 1.01 update installation. Before this I had the latest "silent" 1.01 update, which was identified as 1.01.00.10 in the EXIF. After the update to 1.02, the EXIF headers show that the firmware version now is 1.02.21.14.

After installing the firmware update I checked the menu options and shot a few pictures with and without flash. I did not noticed any obvious changes so far, but it is too early to tell.

I do not have any SDXC card so I cannot check how my K-x works with them.

So is it common for Pentax to release an update and not list all the changes? It seems to me if they made improvements they would tell us. Unless they were trying to cover up a flaw. I'm new to the ways of Pentax so please enlighten.
Thanks,

For Pentax K-x officially there was just one firmware update v1.01, and now there is a second official update - v.1.02.

Reality was a bit different. Depending on when one downloaded v1.01 firmware for K-x they got

1.01.00.05 (as the first 1.01)
1.01.00.07 (as the second 1.01, that followed some time later)
1.01.00.10 (as third 1.01, that was released in April 2010, if I remember this correctly).

There were people who installed 1.01.00.07 and claimed that it helped not only with battery level indicator, but sorted out or reduced some SR problems as well (1/100s shutter speed issue).

These are the reasons why I think that there may be something else in v1.02 firmware release, beside the things that are stated officially.

Thanks Erika, I don't think I'll do the update until there is more clarity, as I don't use the cards they are talking about, and 1.01 is working fine for me. Anything new you find out will be welcomed.

Quick question (and I apologize if this is not the proper place to ask)... Is this update cumulative?

I have never updated my K-x firmware, and was wondering if it is wiser to do the 1.01 then 1.02, or just go straight to 1.02. I don't want to have my awesome camera turned into a brick!

Thanks!

Based on the Pentax statements it is cumulative. O their website they say: "Contents of [Version 1.01] will be also updated."
It is not very clear statement (and English is not my first language), so in my opinion it can be interpreted as "this includes the version 1.01 content as well" or even as "this includes the version 1.01 content which has also been updated".
In any case it means that the previous changes are included (with further updates to them or without).

Cheers,
Erika

Not having luck updating the firmware

I have a K-x (K-2000) and have followed the directions, but when I turn on the camera with the "Menu" button held down, I see the firmware version, but no message about the firmware being updated. What am I doing wrong?

K-x is not K-2000. I think K-2000 is actually K-m! This may be the reason why it does not work. Note that K-x and K-m (K2000) look very similar in appearance.

Ah! Definitely living up to my handle, with emphasis on the "Newby". Thanks, elg; glad I didn't trash the firmware, better half would not have been amused.

adam, i updated my k-x twice. It's pretty simple. Just make sure your battery is strong. Takes about 3mins. One done, camera will show COMPLETE and card indicator will flash non stop. Just turn off and on again and you will have brand new firmware. Fyi all your settings will still be intact.

I know, right? Seems ridiculous. But it does in fact seem to be true. They only document the biggest user-visible changes.

For this reason, it's a good idea to always update, even if you don't care about the listed improvements.

I have updated the firmware yesterday and noticed that when I shoot with the flash, pictures are not burnt out anymore. Usually when shooting macro or portrait with flash subjects would be overexposed. Previous firmware version was 1.01.00.05.
