Meh. Another crappy variable aperture consumer lens. How the heck can this even earn the DA* designation?

As APS-C lenses, they could be seen as the equivalent to the 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 "Bigma" on FF bodies.
Except that the Bigma can still be seen as a 75- 750.

1/ Crappy? You don't know the lens. but you're used to such comments so, not surprising.

2/ Where is DA* critten in the paper? The rumour site said so and you take it for granted. OK, but YOU moan about it though

My point:

26-340mm f/3.3-5.7 on APS-C camera <==> Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 "Bigma" on FF camera

Same as:

DA* 50-135mm f/2.8 on APS-C camera <==> FA* 80-200mm f/2.8 on FF camera.

Of course the Bigma can be seen as a 75-750mm on APS-C camera, and the FA* as a 120-300mm. That was simply not my point.

What I do not understand is all the fuss about SDM, clearly at least the first batches of the DA* 16-50 and 50-135 were affected, so I am not going to argue about that. And the SDM implementation in these lenses might well be less than optimal.

But if I take a look at the newer SDM lenses, such as the DA17-70, the DA*60-250, the DA*200 and 300 and the DA* 55, I have not heard about an above-average SDM failure rate so far. For me that implies that I should not fear SDM, but that I should consider an extended warranty when shopping for a 16-50 and/or a 50-135...

Pentax has never release an * lens for such a long zoom distance, very interesting^^

Looking forward the DA* 12-35

How can you say this if you've never seen, let alone used, the lens?
Seems like dejavu with the announcement of the DA 35/2.4
Do you really think that if true, this DA* will be another low-end consumer lens, particularly since we already have the 55-300?

You'll just have to wait and see if it comes to fruition, but reserve your judgement until it comes out.

what makes you think the 12-35 will be DA*? It is variable aperture, and also has the "WR" designation, all pointing towards a DA not DA* lens.

making an APS-C Bigma would be a great idea as long as its smaller and lighter than Bigma
if the lens does come out and if its good, a lot of people will buy it

Honestly, how good could any lens be with a 25 to 350mm focal length?

I would tend to agree with that. However, it doesn't have to be as good as the DA* 60-250 or the DA* 300. It only has to be as good as the DA 18-250 or the Bigma. If it's even better than these rival super zooms, it should attract notice among those who are attracted to such lenses.

Assuming Pentax is going to make this lens (and the projected DA 12-35), it should be obvious what they are attempting to do. They are trying to make lenses that are unique to their system alone (at least among APS-C glass), so as to attract new customers.

I can't (and don't want to) see Pentax release anything slower than constant F4 aperture in the DA* lineup. It just would not make sense.

Canon has the 28-300mm 3.5-5.6 in their L series, and for a lens with this range, it's surprising that it's not f/6.7 or so
