The Pentax W-series cameras avoid a protruding zoom this way: The zoom is placed perpendicular to the outer lens inside the body. I think they use a prism.
Or a folded mirror.

My understanding of these systems is the tolerance for keeping all planes exactly aligned. This is easier to damp with a very small sensor, but (as we recall from the film days) keeping the sensor plane aligned is very difficult. Add in a mirror...

The shortest path is a straight line which explains both Leica and Sony's pellicle system.

Which may explain why my W10 is slightly de-centered at the tele end of the zoom range

Interesting look at the insides of the Panasonic GH2:

Teardown of the Panasonic Lumix GH2 » Recent Teardowns » Chipworks

I didn't realize that I was using a computer that just happened to take photos! Not a lot of extra space in there...

Thanks.

But I think the D7000 teardown is more interesting.

Confirming the Sony IMX071 image sensor and 512MB on board DRAM.

The latter is intetesting as we have been speculating about the amount of DRAM in the K-5 and 512MB was our best guess. Even more likely now.

Is it, because D7000 can run 10 frames in RAW and K-5 can run 24. Should it need a bigger buffer for that?

Photo Rumors has posted a hilariously pixelated shot allegedly of an NC-1.

Is this the mirrorless Pentax NC-1 camera? | Photo Rumors

Could be, I suppose. It could also be a UFO, or a place setting in a dark restaurant, or an aerial photo of a secret military facility.

Dull brown and dull gray? The same Pentax that promotes its cameras in pink and "Korejanai" colors? I think not!

I said 512 MB and you seem to confuse bit and byte.

If that's true then that's ashamed. Pentax does not have the market strength to launch a new system. Heck, they barely market their current lineup.

It should be pointed out (again) that Pentax can't just join m4/3s anyway. It isn't a freely available specification in the way that 4/3s is. Pentax would have to pay Panasonic & Olympus licensing fees.
