I'm surprised no one did this yet. Here's a side-by-side of the rumored camera with a K-r and a Panasonic GF1. This is all based on approximate size of the hot shoe. Also attached is the NC-1 overlaid with a GF1 silhouette.

Previously I was quite enthusiastic about this camera and whilst I still think that it's an interesting concept I do think it would be much better with a slightly bigger sensor.

Interchangeable lenses on a small camera like this are of limited utility. However I can see that specialist lenses like fisheyes macros* could be interesting.

Perhaps if the lenses are of exceptional quality it might be interesting as a bright light camera where DoF control isn't important. But I guess that makes the system pricey.

*dedicated macro primes could be great given the wide DoF afforded by the sensor

Hmm. Fisheyes and macro lenses - good points. Handheld macros would be very easy with such a camera, that could be quite fun.

If this NC-1 exists and is the Digital Auto 110, then maybe it's a 2.7x crop and a 5.6x crop. A 2.7x crop relative to Auto 110 film, a 5.6x crop relative to 35mm.

Dear Pentax,

please instead make a Digital Auto 110 with:

* An 8 MP, 2.7x crop sensor (1.35x relative to 110) based on a cropped Panasonic GH2 sensor. Not a 5.6x crop sensor.
* The aperture in the body, just like the film Auto 110
* Six little plastic f/2.8 lenses: 6mm, 8.8-26mm, 18mm, 35mm macro, 35-105mm
* The Panasonic GH2's EVF

I wonder if the discontinuation of the K-x is related in any way? Is Pentax planning to offer a mirrorless replacement, slotted below the K-r?

Not sure. K-r price is falling to where K-x price was, making room for a model between K-r and K-5. Perhaps we 'll have a mirrorles with the K-5 sensor.

While that is better than the NC-1 I really hope not. I want a compact mirrorless K-5, not a K-x.

Unfortunately the market really seems to be the opening price point (ie kx) for these, and why butcher k5 sales? However I could see with success on the opening model a higher end model dropping in later
As Nikon has stated they will introduce a pro model the choice is competing against m 4/3 and the poorly design apsc nex with and apsc that is well designed (likely given history) or chase a much smaller high end market with an apsc but go against a segment leader like Nikon. Personally if it were me I'd rather compete initially in the volume market against these 3 (sony poor design and inconsistent, Oly poor past product support-ie slr, Panasonic - see oly at least in the camera world) the market for any ILC is going to be at it's largest in the lower end, and volume sales will come from there. this would eventually allow a higher end as well if well implemented
The majority of us on the forum are not the biggest part of the market, just the most demanding part.
just my $0.02

That makes sense.

interesting

"James Banfield, also of Nikon UK, commented that some of the companies that have been particularly successful in the compact system market have had to spend a lot of money to achieve that success. 'I think in some cases marketing spend has out-stripped sales revenue,' he remarked."

Given the push Oly put on last fall i think he may be speaking about them. Particularly when Sony seems to have grabbed a good chunk of the market growth which as as much to do with channel penetration as anything else (it's easy to guarantee big box presence for them, you want our TV/PS3 etc then you buy and promote our NEX, (Pana has the same sort of power but in my past experience aren't as difficult to deal with as Sony on Assortment issues)

Exactly.

I could see this system working even with it's tiny sensor but weirdly for very specialist applications. It's tiny sensor gives you very deep DoF which many people have cited as a negative which combined with probably very poor high-ISO performance (comparative to DSLRs) is a valid point.

However two areas actually benefit (assuming light levels that allow close to base ISO shooting:

- Macro, as already mentioned

- Wildlife photography

A very high quality prime lens that is extremely fast for it's effective focal length is an interesting idea. Clearly though there'd be some handling issues but shallow DoF is a problem with telephoto primes in some situations - this setup would give you options you wouldn't have otherwise (at the expense of others sure).

However, I am not sure these kinds of applications would be something the target market of this camera would actually be looking for.

It looks like this would be about the size of the Panasonic GF2.
If the photo is real and the size comparison is accurate, then both, the small size mirrorless and forthcoming APSC mirrorless would both be interesting offers.

An APSC mirrorless is what is currently hot in the market anyway (and it is what my OP was about).

A camera like the Lumix LX5, smaller even and with an interchangeable lens, with a comparably sized sensor and prize, must appeal to Ned at least

I agree macro photography will benefit from the small sensor, but I'm not sure about wildlife. That's not my area of interest, but I see plenty of wildlife pics that benefit a great deal from out of focus backgrounds; usually bird photo's. Plus, even someone like myself that is into lightweight backpacking wouldn't balk at caring the Panasonic 100-300mm lens along for a hike. It's not very big and will give you 600mm's of reach plus decent DOF control. On top of that high ISO are often needed so faster shutter speeds can be used. So if I were a nature photographer I'd certainly choose m4/3's as my system over a small sensor system or even an APS-C system.

Yes, but on a 5.6 crop camera it would give you 1680 mm of reach
