Cannikin, the only thing about your theory the numbers involved could be higher (and subsequently greater losses) is that a great many consumers do not read forums, and quite possibly will never really realise a) they ahve a fault, b) Pentax will repair it. Bearing in mind some countries have no official importer, and some countries have a 40 day warranty.

I'm not really nit picking or arguing, just wondering if you had really factored those into your equations?

Indeed, that's why I figured in my original estimate that only 50% of affected cameras might be sent in (my original estimate was out of maybe 40,000 affected cameras, 20,000 would be sent in). This new information just raises the maximum number of affected units, and by extension the number of potential returns.

Remember, it is not just individuals sending their cameras in, but there have been many reports of retailers sending back their stock. Considering that a buyer of an expensive, high end camera like the K-5 is more likely to be an informed customer who did research online (with the relative scarcity of publicity the K-5 and Pentax get elsewhere), the service announcement was posted on the front page of many major photography websites, and that the vast majority of stock would be sent to North America, Europe and East Asia, where Pentax has official presence and warranties (logistics are such that if there is not a major center of distribution, imports would be far less, restricted to individual buyers with limited ability to purchase and hold stock), I don't think it's unreasonable to assume a significant percentage (up to 50%) of cameras would be sent back.

From your first link:
"Jessops said the move [to drop Pentax from its range of products] followed a review to establish which products meet customer needs at the 'best prices'. "
Best prices for them, or what?
Or have UK Pentax prices been exorbitant?
