most of the time we think that occidental culture rules over the world, that everything has to be like we think, but oriental people is about 2/3 of the global population...

Well japan is kind of a much more scary caricature, a grotesque one really, of occidental values and ways...both in social and political organization.
That camera is just a symptom of how the market try to provide a personality and individualization that social values tend to drown...(just one positive aspect..they are not catholics and they don't have all that guilt complex built over centuries...).
Japan is not Asia...it's more like a Disney Land/Las Vegas on bad acid.
(and this generalization like all generalizations is simplist..)

If you've ever spent more than 10 minutes watching a Japanese variety show, there's nothing about this camera that can surprise you. However, this camera is definitely a narrow demographic target, and hey, it can't really hurt.

Ultimate kitsch sells well in some instances

Like a lot of others, this isn't for me, but then again it wasn't intended for me. But at almost 1,100 a pop, I'm sure they will make a good profit. And it's ugly enough to probably sell out quickly. Anybody remember the black velvet paintings of tigers and such?

Sometimes it is...
But you're right it was a bit over the top..it was motivated though..i've been watching some documentaries about how japanese societies banned those who were known to participate in the Zengakuren revolts in the 60s, then how political power was in name only a democracy, and the ties with the yakuza during the 54 year rule of the LDP, then all this thing about the Kuroshi : people who die of exhaustion..that it's a disease that only exists there...
All this seasonned and in contrast with the exentricity that some people need to escape the oppressive social rules...ahh, and don't forget the torture me for money T.V. programs, those are insane...
...it's like all the kitch of disney and las vegas in a dark shady environement...kind of reminds me the Blade runner atmosphere where you feel all the weight, and the misery but with a colorfull grin to it.
And then they exell too in bringing that tijuana on dirt cheap weed sensation:
Welcome to Shima Spain Village

I opted for the Gold bust of Elvis (now buried somewhere in my basement the corner store used to have lots of them along with black velvet Elvis and best of all an Elvis wall clock with swiveling hips

I've been wanting one for years...they don't have to go nuts, just use the same pattern as on the grips, in the same place. Maybe have the body dark green, though black would still be ok. Replace the soft parts on the matching battery grip...good to go.

Sorry to ruin the party but I did see a camo K-x on display at BicCamera when I was in Japan in January.

Didn't think to take a photo of it.. but had a laugh with the missus.

Don't even know if it is a model they sell or just for display.

Cheers

It's like someone washed the camera in a rainbow! Are we sure this wasn't a manipulated image??? Looks like something model makers call "kit bashing"!

Does this mean we can expect more high-fashion/artist designed models?

I can see it now -
a roast-beef covered K-5 and whipped-cream and gold-chain embelished K-5 on sale at B&H :-D
