Sigma Starting to Produce Weather Sealed Lenses?

I'm hoping that this is a signal that Sigma will eventually release either the 300-800mm f5.6 or the 800mm f5.6 in Pentax mount. It'd be great to have some options in that lens range although I better start saving now.

EDIT: Looks like B&H is listing it already. They list it at $3,199.00 "only" $200 more than the 300mm f2.8 prime.

You know I just watched the video on the 800mm prime. And they say it is made in the pentax mount. So i looked in my new sigma catalog and it showes it as being made for Pentax also.
I will call the dealer and give him a number and see if it is a special order or what?

Sigma used to make the 800mm f5.6 in Pentax mount when the ist and istDS were still available new. I remember seeing it on B&H for around $6,000 - $7,000. If I remember correctly, it was cancelled around the time that the K10D came out. The design exists, Sigma just needs to be convinced of the demand for it.

It is not a matter of demand. As I mentioned somewhere else, Pentax will provide technology and make the SD-1 bodies for Sigma (a customised K7/K5), and Sigma will make it's entire line available for the PK-mount.

Yes, where does this come from because it would be very welcome news indeed if the 300-800mm came out in K-mount? Even if they released the 800mm f5.6, it would still be great for quite a few of the surfing spots I frequent. Not sure how useful it would be for birding with that super tight FOV compared the the short end of the 300-800, but it's better than nothing.

A lovely lense indeed. I tried that and the DA*300/4 side by side in the shop. The 60-250 is sharp ... but the 300 even more so, and gorgeous bokeh too. That one should surely be on the list.

Well, I never thought they'd ever release the 120-300mm f2.8 in Kmount, and they did. We'll just have to see what time brings, and the 800mm f5.6 was available in Kmount, so it's not like they'd be starting from scratch unless they want to make it HSM.

At least it's still available as a non-HSM version. Better than nothing, but the HSM would be much nicer? Can anyone comment on the focus speed of the non-HSM version?

As a long time Canon user I avoided Sigma like the plague. The 50mm F/1.4 for the K-7 is the first one I have ever really used much less actually bought. The 50mm Sigma is a very good lens. I have been more than pleased with the performance.

It appears that Sigma has had so much success with the 50mm F/1.4 and with demand for the 85mm f/1.4 very strong, Sigma will be rolling out a 24mm f/1.4, a 35mm f/1.4 and a 135mm f/2.

Pentax really has no competitive offerings when it come to really fast glass in those focal lengths.

Well, if you're counting only new, currently made offerings, there's the 55/1.4, the 31mm/1.8, the 21/3.2 and the 50-135/2.8.

The Sigma offerings might be a little faster, but if you have to stop down further to get the same quality, meh...

So you have already tested the new glass? The Sigma 50mm is better than the 55mm Pentax in almost every way and it is $200.00 cheaper. Most of the "small" Pentax lenses show a good bit of vignetting wide open and performance of 31mm at F/18 is not anything to get excited about. The 21 f/3.2 is not a fast lens and while center performance is good, edge performance even at 3.2 is average. the 50-135mm does not get real good until f/4.0.

Then there is the issue of SDM. The Sigma HSM is a very good system with a very low failure rate.

We will not know if the new Sigma glass is better or worse that what is currently available. We don't know if they will be priced competitively with other options. I do know that having more options is a good thing.
