Digital 6x7

I was in my local photostore and the salesman told me a Pentax rep had visitid them recently. He had heard rumors about a new 6x7 from Pentax. The sales man also mentioned full frame but probably used wrong term for 6x7. Sounds all wrong, who would make a 6x7 sensor?

Swedish Pentax reps has leaked before. I talked to a guy about the k-5 before it was mentioned here or on any other site I visit. But he described it as the k-r ended up so he did not have all info or the name of k-r wasn't decided back then. Posted it here in mars last year or so if you want to check. also Mabo copied it from another forum where I posted it in and put it here. Likely it was the same Pentax rep as it was in the same town.

Anyway, there hasn't been any good rumors for a long time. Come on guys

The largest sensors availabe today are barely 6x4,5, and are in 40,000 euros medium format backs.

I don't believe this for a moment. A digital 6x7 would be extremely expensive because of sheer sensor size. I would expect prices in excess of $50,000.

I would agree at this point in time. however sensors drop pretty damn quick it isn't that long since a 22 mp crop MF cost $40000
but any sooner than say 3-4 years from now would surprise the hell out of me
(damn it would be nice though if that big lottery win comes in )

they can start development now and by the time they finish it it will be affordable "enough"

anyway, i think they should just talk with Sony and make a FF 645D 90Mpix CMOS sensor based on K-5 with live-view and maybe even video.

much less development needed, and they can still charge a fortune for such a camera.

Or do both

I must say it still might hint about something high end.

Also he said the 645D is a crop as if the new camera wasn't going to be crop.

I'd say he was hinting about the 645D's successor with a FF 6x4,5 sensor. The new 25mm also hints in that direction (it's a fullframe lens). But again: I don't believe a digital 6x7 for a moment. Editing just one photo would kill my desktop computer

And just the thought of buying the camera would kill my back account!!!

Though having a 6x7 digital camera would absolutely kill in terms of resolution! Who needs FF if you can have ff 6x7... :-D

Heh! 20 years ago my computer could barely edit a 0.3mp picture. While current computer's in general are just as slow when editing Word documents etc. (because the bloating of the latter keeps up with the speed improvements of the former), image editing really has come a long way since then.

My current computer has 1000 times the memory, 3000 times the HD capacity and roughly 1000 times the cpu capacity (in IPS), but I do think it has some problems with 300mp pictures. But I think the 0.3mp pictures from 20 years ago where only 1/4 the bit depth, so let's compare to 75mp. That should be doable, but slow. SO, in 20 years I think we're looking at 75 gigapixels being the limit for what you can handle with amateur computer equipment

And in 5 years, I have no doubt that computers will be able to handle 200mp 6x7 images. I'd prefer 4:3 ratio, though, how about 7.3x5.5? Fits within the same image circle as 6x7

Use 4 smaller sensors....

And make the camera powerful enough to stitch them together quickly. Can probably be done with a multi-processor camera.

Now THAT would be my dream rig...still LOVE the 67.

Cheers,
Cameron

Mmmmh, somehow I don't think stitching sensors is possible, as there would be surely a small gap between sensors... It would have been done ages ago, otherwise... And FF bodies would be a lot cheaper!!!
