Awesome. I've got the metz 48 and it's very cool that they can update the firmware to support newer Pentax cameras.

Looks like they're adding a preflash-suppression auto-servo mode. Cool. Wonder how that makes on the AF 48-1 / AF 50-1 and other flashes without a sensor for "auto" mode.

Matt,
I have no idea what that feature means - can you explain?

It means that it can act as a "dumb" slave, triggered by the camera flash but with no special communication. The pre-flash suppression means that it knows that modern TTL systems fire a preflash and then the main flash — this mode automatically ignores that first flash and only fires on the second. (At full power or whatever manual level you've set it to.)

The flashes offered this feature in the non-Pentax versions, with the explanation that since Pentax offers wireless P-TTL on all of its camera bodies, it's not need. But it's nice to have the added flexibility, so I'm glad they've given it to us as well.

Well, what it says is "Rear function with Pentax K-r and K-5."

I looked up Metz' glossary and this is what it is supposed to mean:
QuoteQuote:
REAR
Synchronisation to the 2nd shutter curtain for more natural blurring effects for longer exposure times.
So, it's not directly mentioning the compatibility issues but at least, it lists K-5 and K-r as supported.

Since rear curtain sync is a feature of the flash in general, it's clearly a compatibility fix — just not necessarily the one people were looking for.

For those strobists in mind. The servo mode gives you more "control". From a quick test, I found that I could sync up to:
- 1/4 power at 1/180s
- 1/2 power at 1/160s

full power doesn't seem to work at any shutter speed.

Only Pentax can fix this problem. It exists with their flashes as well.
