Samsung NX Getting More Serious

I don't think anyone has posted this yet, a Korean blog-post containing detailed information from a meeting on the future of the Samsung NX system.

Samsung Future

It is interesting to see the direction (directions might be a better phrase--they seem to be trying a little of everything) that Pentax's former DSLR parter is taking with the NX system (which really didn't attract that much attention initially). In short for cameras they plan to have three lines (the compact, hip line; the standard DSLR-styled line as the NX10 was, and a higher-level line). More interesting to me is the lenses (does anyone know who is making and designing all these for Samsung now). The coming lenses are:

16mm f2.4 Ultra-Wide Pancake
60mm f2.8 Macro OIS
16-80mm f3.5-4.5 OIS "Movie Home"
85mm f.14 "Premium Portrait"
700mm prototype (no info given)

It's worth reading the blog post and seeing how Samsung is stratifying their system. We shall (eventually) see how Pentax plans to approach the market.

interesting. is that the 85 that was seen in that 'blurry photo’ ordeal way back? looks very nice.

Well they need to design a new sensor since they are still using the sensor from the K-7 and that is not for future groundbraking camera's (it is good, just needs a replace). At the Photokina last year there not a dead person looking (at the huge stand of Samsung) and trying the NX system camera's. So I don't see a lot of attraction of it in Europe.

Current lenses, i.e. 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6, 50-200mm f/4-5.6, 30mm f/2 pancake, 20mm f/2.8 pancake and 20-50mm f/3.5-5.6 have been designed and are manufactured by Optron-Tec, a Korean company:

not even in the slightest, but it looks nice. and I remember a huge thing a year or so ago? maybe less? about a new 85mm from samsung that was rumored to be the samsung version of an upcoming pentax 85, or something to that effect.

The only lens that makes sense to me is the 16 mm pancake. The rest are going to be big lenses on a small camera. Not pocketable by any means, or even close. Why not just get an SLR if you are going to get an 85 mm f1.4, or a 700 mm lens for that matter?

85mm is still a somewhat strange choice to me. I suppose they are going after people who think fast 85mm lens=portrait lens. That is certainly true for full-frame, but this is a APS-C camera, so this is much tighter than that classic standard in FOV. The DA55 is more of a fast classic portrait FOV equivalent, and I think Pentax took that line of thought. Funny to see Samsung going the other way. Not that even 85mm on crop isn't a fine focal length for portraits.

Looks interesting. Handling the NX10 didn't do much for me - why do I want tiny camera with big lens? Oh and what is with the ghetto photoshoot at the end of the article?

I still can't bring myself to buy a Samsung camera no matter how "serious" they get. To me they just seem like giant electronics company that just sees potential revenue in the camera business; no different than stereos to them. After I saw the way they classified their lenses in the road map that belief was reinforced. This part really cracked me up:

“Movie Pro” = 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6
“Movie Home” = 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5

I consider myself to be semi-pro, and I’d take the faster and wider 16-80mm over an f/5.6 superzoom any day of the week. This was also ridiculous:

“16mm ultra-wide”

Say what? 16mm is far from an ultra-wide on an APS-C camera. How clueless can these people be? I swear I don’t think any of them know how to use the products they make. Let’s just say I’m really pulling for Pentax, Olympus, Nikon, Fuji, and Leica in this new mirrorless war. After briefly owning a Sony NEX-3 I can say for sure I don’t want the same company that makes my TV and my toaster to also make my photography gear.

Your posts are full of delirium.

Try to learn lenses hardware.

16 mm lens is ULTRA-WIDE lens. Any lens has REAL focal length.

Even at FF cameras lenses with focal length from 8 till 24 mm are ULTRA-WIDE lenses.
There is standart classification of lenses.

yup. a 16 is a 16 is a 16, regardless of sensor size.

And in my old Takumar broshures, 24mm and down are listed as ultra-wide. I think that the the standard definition. So even if you consider the crop factor, 16mm would be ultra-wide.
