I was just thinking the same thing. M-series should logicaly be next. Not that I think it will happen. But it would be cool though... LXD would also be nice....

oh I dream for a LX-D. Heck I just dream to own a LX (Film)
but in reality I would really love a MZS-based digital that actualy comes out, and has weather sealing of course. IMO that is he best AF body ever created for feel weight etc.

Perhaps you're right. However, in my defense, I simply posted this thread mentioning a "K20D" next to a 9 page, 122 responses, and 8297 views, thread also mentioning a "K20D." Of course, I could have simply brought this topic up in that thread, making it 11 pages instead.

Well, I don't know if Pentax Durango (Dodge), Pentax Taurus (Ford), Pentax Impala (Chevy), Pentax Town & Country (Chrysler), or Pentax Miata (Mazda) would have that much market impact. However, you might have something with Pentax Focus (Ford), Pentax Edge (Ford), Pentax Vue (Saturn), or Pentax Legacy (Subaru).

Honestly though, whenever I hear a model name for a camera, you have to look twice to see what manufacturer it is as they all sound the same. I can guarantee that letter "D" will be in there somewhere, and it doesn't matter who makes the camera.

the pentax 911, 928, 323, ...

wonder what a carrera version would look like

it's got have the 'D' to to distinguish it as digital from the huge numbers of film cameras that everyone is still making

1st gen slr w/ pentaprism (that really sold) Spotomatic = ist
1st gen Kmount K 2,1000 etc = K100/K10D
2nd gen Kmount M, MX, ME, MG etc. = MXD?
Pro Kmount LX= LXD?

Exactly what I was thinking. They've only had the MX, ME, MG, and MV. That leaves a lot of letters for camera nomenclature, especially if they expand to the Scandinavian alphabets. But why stop there? There's a whole world of Cyrillic letters out there!

There seems to be differing opinions about the possible name of the next more capable Pentax camera. Another thread here, for example, suggests the name K20D for a camera with capabilites greater than the K10D. However, since Pentax seems to be numbering their cameras in reverse (numbers decreasing as capabilities increase, the K10D more capable than the K100D), wouldn't the next more capable camera more likely be named the K5D, or even K1D?

Since each Pentax currently has a one in the number, doesn't that favor K1D over K5D? Or if the next camera is a K5D, would that suggest the possibility of another, even more capable, model sometime down the road (both a K5D and an eventual K1D)? What are the odds of two new more capable Pentax models? And how do you think features might break down between the two? All that should certainly be some food for thought.

If you look at Pentax history for its (Z-serie and later) bodies naming scheme it should look somehow like this:

replacement for K100D -> K200D
replacement for K10D -> K20D
above K10D: K5D
"pro" model: K1D

But the arrival of an hypthetic K5D doesn't mean there'd be K1D. REmeber the model above MZ-5n? Yeah MZ-S... never was there an MZ-1 so...

If they choose to produce only one model above K10D then:

K100D, K10D, K1D or K1000D, K100D, K10D, K1D. Who knows?

In any case, a K20D would a replacement for K10D. But again, Pentax knows probably beter than any other brand how to confuse buyers with stupid naming scheme. No, I'mnot talking about *ist serie which naming has nothing that bad, really.

I'm talking about the following serie (in order) Z10, Z1, Z5 (yes that one existed), Z20, Z50p, Z70. Z1/Z5/Z10 or in good order (feature wise). But Z20 was an upper model than Z10. Z50p and Z70 were sligh variations like ist-DS/DL/DS2/DL2. Talk about understanding market position...

If there's a K5D, it would peform at or better than a Canon EOS 1D Mark III.

If there's a K1D, it would peform better than a Hasselbald 36 MP camera.

what makes you think model numbers on pentax systems have to make sense.

if you think the do, explain to me the the ZX/MZ model numbering system.

Within that series were aa 3, 5, 5n, 7, 10, 30, 50, 60, S, L, & M. the numbers seemed to have ben assigned by a committee that didn't remember what it did yesterday.

IMHO that would be a good thing( e.g. following some rhyme or reason.)

while I haven't bought a P & S yet, I've spent some time figuring out their product line,
and when and get around to get one, it will be fairly easy to figure out which is which, and if some purveyor is trying to pedal an obsolete model---it won't be hard to tell.

Where JACN stands for: Just A Camera Name
