Pentax K20D, K5D, or K1D (or both a K5D and a K1D)?

There seems to be differing opinions about the possible name of the next more capable Pentax camera. Another thread here, for example, suggests the name K20D for a camera with capabilites greater than the K10D. However, since Pentax seems to be numbering their cameras in reverse (numbers decreasing as capabilities increase, the K10D more capable than the K100D), wouldn't the next more capable camera more likely be named the K5D, or even K1D?

Since each Pentax currently has a one in the number, doesn't that favor K1D over K5D? Or if the next camera is a K5D, would that suggest the possibility of another, even more capable, model sometime down the road (both a K5D and an eventual K1D)? What are the odds of two new more capable Pentax models? And how do you think features might break down between the two? All that should certainly be some food for thought.

Well, they could make K1D and then afterwards use Canon variant like K1Dsn Mark IV Super

We dont really know since they have actually been changing the name completely with new models instead of just updating it
istD - k10d
istDs - k100d

So if we follow their style then the new k10d should be named something completely different, not starting with K at all.

if they stick with the k naming scheme then if you ask me k1d should not be an upgraded k10d it should be a model above it. its more natural to assume
k100d - k200d
k10d - k20d
k1d (who knows if they will make one, I for sure am hoping for it)

If you look at Pentax history for its (Z-serie and later) bodies naming scheme it should look somehow like this:

replacement for K100D -> K200D
replacement for K10D -> K20D
above K10D: K5D
"pro" model: K1D

But the arrival of an hypthetic K5D doesn't mean there'd be K1D. REmeber the model above MZ-5n? Yeah MZ-S... never was there an MZ-1 so...

If they choose to produce only one model above K10D then:

K100D, K10D, K1D or K1000D, K100D, K10D, K1D. Who knows?

In any case, a K20D would a replacement for K10D. But again, Pentax knows probably beter than any other brand how to confuse buyers with stupid naming scheme. No, I'mnot talking about *ist serie which naming has nothing that bad, really.

I'm talking about the following serie (in order) Z10, Z1, Z5 (yes that one existed), Z20, Z50p, Z70. Z1/Z5/Z10 or in good order (feature wise). But Z20 was an upper model than Z10. Z50p and Z70 were sligh variations like ist-DS/DL/DS2/DL2. Talk about understanding market position...

The name of the camera is the last thing I care about. And to discuss what some think it might be...
I'm getting slowly but surely sick of this "something is coming", "what's next from pentax", "next camera wish list" posts.

I agree with one thing though, this should not be in news and releases. that forum seems to be the one with the most mispostings.

I think if they are upgrading K10 than it'll be K20D, if it's gonna be something better then I think it'll be K1D, but who knows, maybe we'll end up with 645D, nobody knows.... (well maybe Ben... )
But for sure I agree with and, that threads like these shouldn't be posted here between news and releases, maybe there should be another forum, called our speculations and wishes....

Pentax changed the numbering with the Optio serie. First generation - 10, 2nd generation - 20, 3rd generation - 30 and so on. Optio A10, A20, A30 and now A40. This suggests that the K-serie will have similar naming - Today's K10D and K100D replacements gets the names K20D and K200D. On the other hand, we don't know if Pentax will follow the Optio-numbering for the DSLR's. So, at this stage - we don't know, so anything works.

Why don't they just give them names like vehicles lol.

Honestly though, whenever I hear a model name for a camera, you have to look twice to see what manufacturer it is as they all sound the same. I can guarantee that letter "D" will be in there somewhere, and it doesn't matter who makes the camera.

Never, they'll do the same as Canon... or then of there's nothing between K10D and K1D, it will look like K1D,K2D,K3D etc... or combine both like Canon: EOD-1D and EOS-1Ds and then mk2,mk3,mk666 and so on lol

I was just thinking the same thing. M-series should logicaly be next. Not that I think it will happen. But it would be cool though... LXD would also be nice....
