Camera Market Share

Perhaps most of you already seen it, in that case let me know and I'll delete this thread: Bloomberg reported camera market share here: Sony, Nikon Narrow Gap to Canon With New Digital Camera Models - Bloomberg
I copy hereafter the data for you:

HTML Code:
Worldwide Digital Camera Market Shares by Vendor
====================================================
Vendor 2010 2009
----------------------------------------------------
Canon 19 19
Sony 17.9 16.9
Nikon 12.6 11.1
Samsung 11.1 10.9
Kodak 7.4 8.8
Panasonic 7.6 7.6
Olympus 6.1 6.2
Fuji 4.9 5.4
Casio 4 4.7
PENTAX 1.5 1.7
Vivitar 1.2 0.7
Other 6.7 7
-----------------------------------------------------
2010 does not sound like a good year for Pentax, doesn't it? perhaps most of the Pentaxians hold their wallets awaiting for the k-5...

This includes P&S which, for us, renders it meaningless since Pentax is pretty much non significant in P&S business.

This is total digital camera market share, not just DSLR. Pentax's P&S cameras are even more niche market than their DSLRs. Kodak's numbers will fall even more in 2011 because they have no interchangeable lens cameras.

Of course, but I was more looking at the 1.7->1.5 drop than comparing with other brands. And that are not good news

The drop for Pentax is insignificant compared to the drop for Casio, Fuji, & Kodak. And it doesn't mean they sold fewer cameras. They just had a smaller percentage of a larger market.

2010 market was enormous growth from 2009, so the numbers camera's sold could be the same. No DSLR information?

When I look at this:
In the market for cameras with interchangeable lens, or single lens reflex cameras, Canon controlled 44.5 percent of the market, followed by Nikon with 29.8 percent and Sony with 11.9 percent, according to the data.

So top three have a market share of 86,2 %. Who shares the rest of the market when you talk about NX and Micro43 and Pentax? Just a few Leica-camera's.

OK, doing some math adds the perspective:

HTML Code:
Canon 19 19 0.00
Sony 17.9 16.9 0.06
Nikon 12.6 11.1 0.14
Samsung 11.1 10.9 0.02
Kodak 7.4 8.8 -0.16
Panasonic 7.6 7.6 0.00
Olympus 6.1 6.2 -0.02
Fuji 4.9 5.4 -0.09
Casio 4 4.7 -0.15
PENTAX 1.5 1.7 -0.12
Vivitar 1.2 0.7 0.71
Other 6.7 7 -0.04
Only Kodak and Casio performed worst, and there are a bunch of "+" (though marginal) notwithstanding the crisis...

I guess the sky is falling then and there is no way Pentax can possibly survive. You better sell off all your Pentax gear immediately and go with a brand with a bigger market share.

Well in a few years the P&S market is almost non-exsisting due to phone's with better camera's. There is a superzoomlens availeble for iPhone now.

Not really. Units sold across the entire digital camera market just isn't a metric that tells us much: (Frankly, by this metric, no-names from K-mart and Playskool are collectively-spanking some major brands for marketshare,) ...With Pentax, they're mostly just keeping a hand in with the P&S market, which far outweighs DSLRs by this metric: the important things for us are a) Are they making what we need and b) Are they making enough profit at it to keep doing it well.

That P&S market for that time period's probably mostly about whatever they picked up with pretty typical stuff and the W90.... (Which is certainly of note: I like Lumix P&Ses, but I want one of those type models for my sweetie. Weatherized rugged thingie with built in macro lights? What *else* would a photog want to send her point-and-shootin' botanist sweetie out in the field with? )

But like someone said. Niche. Good niche, though.

Still, it's *good* for us if the company stresses their DSLR line.

As the article says:
"In the market for cameras with interchangeable lens, or single lens reflex cameras, Canon controlled 44.5 percent of the market, followed by Nikon with 29.8 percent and Sony with 11.9 percent, according to the data."

No number for Pentax, but it is likely to be not far behind Sony. I'd say at about 8-10%.

I find these IDC numbers a bit strange though. It isn't indicated whether it is sourced sourced from the JP camera industry association data that gets released quarterly, or what. I know IDC's data on the computer industry is often way out.

Anyone else find it sad that Vivitar has almost as large a share as Pentax (and even grew from 2009 to 2010 by quite a bit)?

I would be more impressed with Vivitar's share if they weren't sold at almost every store in the US.
