d7000 is in a lower category than the k-5, they are not competing...if you think they are you dont know anything about cameras.

look at the button layout on the d7000 and you'll see its a toy! Compare the k-5 to the e-5, they are in the same 'class'.

Dunno, dude...

vs.

Not seeing "toylike" at all.

It's virtually the same layout as on the D300/D700.

That actually makes it worse.
I could just about stomach the D7000 taking the award over the K-5, but the E-5 ....

It's rather like a lifetime achievement award to an actor in really bad health. If they're ever going to get a DSLR award, it had better be now.

Haha, that's exactly what I thought!

Grats to Pentax on the 645D award. I just wish the K-5 clenched the title that E-5 won as well. The award at the MF level likely wont result in much user-base swing, especially in comparison to what a K-5 award would bring. Of course Pentax still needs to fill the FF gap...

Eh, there's no AF button on the D7000?

Really? the AE-L OR AF button (only one button not two separate ones like the K-5), rear dial, LIVE VIEW and RECORD (video) button is put in a nice prominent and easy to access spot under your thumb... what a waste of important real estate. In fact what is the point of having the live view switch in such a great position where you can access it with your eye to the camera when that is the last place you need it to be?

ISO and GREEN is inaccessible on bottom left unless you move your face from VF and or hand from the lens holding position.

K-5 has
AE-L, rear dial, AF, AF selector, and green button in the prominent positions, much more functional for high end users. ISO is on top right accessible with your eye to the VF.

These kind of ergonomic choices make for major differences in usability. And the d300 has a separate AF and AE-L button. the d7000 has been simplified / dumbed down in this regard. Even with that improvement and having ISO on the top left for the d300s the K-5 still has a better thought out layout.

Heck even the rear dial is in a less ergonomic position to the K-5, and the strap lug is to the left of the mode dial making the strap get in the way of your hand unlike the K-5 which has the strap in front and out of the way... DETAILS... very important

I'm not dissing the fine cameras from Nikon, but I really prefer the K-5 button layout, which is why I upgraded from D90.

I have to say at the moment I have more confidence in the focussing ability and focus quality of the Nikon line.

Let's see if I feel better when I get my 50-135mm f/2.8 back from the shop. It is clearly damaged as it intermittently won't focus at infinity at 135mm. My 31mm limited is spectacular.

I have played lately with a Nikon d90, and the AF is far ahead of that in my K-x (my opinion). Was using Sigma 17-70. I was able to get used fast with Nikon's button layout. It is different, but could not say "this is crap or a toy". No idea how AF in d3000-5000 is.

if one was to consider getting a Nikon, it's better to get a D700 instead. I'm still bummed up for not jumping on an offer on a used D700 for $1,800 about more than a year ago. that was when I just recently switched from Nikon. I could had used some great fast 85s and long excellent telephoto macros (150 and 180). not to mention that the not so rare Sigma 100-300 zoom lens for the Nikon mount.
